Donny Schatz started 7th and took home the $40,000.00. Jason Johnson 2nd and Brian Brown 3rd. Great race! Huge crowd!

Crazy that he was basically out to lunch most of the weekend and found a way to win.

He seems to do the same thing every year about the second weekend of August as well.

Donny did one thing in particular Friday night and Saturday afternoon......he ran everywhere on the track like he was "reading it". Didn't just run consistant lines. He's not the "checkers or wreckers" style of racer the Ragin Cajun is when he gets wound up, and the track kind of required that the first two events of the Nationals becuase of the earlier weather. Donny is a calculated driver. So frickin smooth and deliberate with his lines and that's why no one can really touch him when his car is so right all the time. When the four locked in drivers ran their hot laps on Saturday night, I watched Donny every lap. He was the only one of the four locked on the bottom. and he ran every hot lap there, with the exception of the last lap when he went through 1&2 on the cushion. Nothing impressive, but I knew it then. A few of the guys that were with us were discounting Donny to win because "he aint done nothin at all". That's when I spoke up and said "there's one thing different tonight boys, they're racing for $40,000.00!" The rest was pure Donny Schatz and the #15 car, fast no matter where he ran on the track, and smooth. I have other favorites, but damn Schatz is really really good!

Donny wasn't locked in. He was 9th in points, which gave him an outside front row spot in his heat. Winning the heat by passing Lynton put him in the dash. That's where I knew he was going to be there at the end. It would be easy to say that Pittman and Sweet dropped out in front, but Donny had already passed them when their problem occurred. All in all, a tremendous event!

Kind of like winning Knoxville Nats from B-Main & 21st (24th?) a few years back, right?
Everybody wrote him off, watched him methodically work his way up.. by the time he got to 5th, it dawned on me that "this guy is gonna win again, isn't he?"

Knoxville was a bigger accomplishment but he’s great there. He’s won at Jackson in the past but the 3 races in 2017 and the first 2 in 2018 he just didn’t have it. I might have been naive but I just didn’t see Schatz winning the 40k.
