New USAC Sprint Car spec tire.

Officials of the United States Auto Club (USAC) and the Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS), along with the seven Indiana Sprint Week tracks, jointly announced today the introduction on a new primary Sprint Car spec tire for racing throughout the series and Indiana.

The Hoosier 105/16-15 MED was chosen as the exclusive sprint car tire for non-wing sprint car racing after careful consideration of any cost impacts on race teams. The decision was based on no impact on current wheel sizes, the ability to reverse tire direction for sustained life, and a locked in 2014 price point below what 2013 market pricing was for the 104/17-15 DT-3.

Effective May 1st for USAC events, and June 2nd for all MSCS and member track events, the only tire allowed in competition will be the Hoosier 105/16-15 MED. For races prior to those dates, teams will be allowed to use their current inventory of Hoosier 104/17-15 DT-3 or Hoosier 105/18-15 HT2 along with the new Hoosier 105/16-15 MED. This will allow team's sufficient time to utilize any existing tire inventory. Organizations and tracks requiring this change with today's announcement include:

USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series
USAC CRA Sprint Car Series
MSCS Sprint Cars
Bloomington Speedway
Gas City I-69 Speedway
Kokomo Speedway
Lawrenceburg Speedway
Lincoln Park Speedway
Terre Haute Action Track
Tri-State Speedway

The new spec tire decision was driven by the common use of the tire in sprint car racing throughout the United States, including other popular sprint car series (see list below).

HOOSIER 105/16-15 MED REQUIRED SPEC TIRE - CURRENT
USAC Southwest Sprint Series and West Coast Sprint Series
ASCS (American Sprint Car Series - All Divisions)
USCS (United Sprint Car Series)
SOD (Sprints on Dirt)
Attica, OH and Fremont, OH weekly 410 sprints and 305's.
Knoxville, IA - weekly 360's and 305's.
UMSS (Upper Midwest Sprint Series)
NCRA (National Championship Racing Association)
MOWA (Midwest Open Wheel Association)

The following run the 105/16-15 as an option tire:
World of Outlaws
All Star Circuit of Champions
IRA (Interstate Racing Association)
NOSA (Northern Outlaw Sprint Association)
OVSCA (Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association)

Making this the required tire across all the sprint car divisions is the smartest rule in years. While it will save racers some money on a weekly basis the really important thing it will do is to make 900HP useless.  You now have a tire that will only hook up about 650HP. What does that mean? It means that 360's can run with the 410's on a half mile track. Since all we have left is a half mile track, that is a good thing. Prior to this, a 360 team had little chance of having a top 10 finish so why spend the money to go. Better to spend the money running a 360 race where you can have a chance at a win even though the purse is smaller, or stay home, or quit racing. Now that has changed. You will now see better car counts and closer racing. Sounds like something fans might want to watch. Thanks Don Flanders!

Now can we stop calling these cars 410's and 360's? They are all Sprint Cars. Call them "Fire Breathing", "Mud Slinging", "Unlimited", "Outlaw" (oops, that one is taken)  Sprint Cars. Fans don't want to pay to watch what they perceive as a "limited" or "restricted" class.

It sure as hell isn't going to make a 900hp motor useless,it's softer than the DT3 tire we used to run and we had no problem hooking up the car with that tire,it's going to be business as usual.

Good call 91. I know BCB64 means will, but unless you come right out of the trenches you won't understand the magic thats worked with chassis setups when when thrown a curve ball. You will see very little difference when watching between HTW and 105-16 MED at PAS. 410's will rule and 360's will struggle to keep up. Shorter, slick track ???? he may be right, on occasion. it might be a 3 tenths loss at best for the high horse power cars using the hoosier med  . the guys that know how to drive 410 cars and are competitive dont just mash the gas and go , it takes a lot of throttle modulation . its great that a single tire is being used across the board . the only place it will save money is when we go from series to series . the wear charastics of the htw was a great match for 410 non wing cars in wear and performance . i am guessing we will now see top non wing teams buying and using more tires , like we did in the dt3 days . its too bad that the wing cars are dictating what tire the non wing cars will use . this is more about simplifiying tire production at hoosier than it is about saving racers money across the board . this will not change how intense and amazing non wing racing is .
