Wow, did they even wear those small neckbraces back then? This car and the Hamilton 77 will always be my favorites.

I assume your meaning a Hans device or now there are alot of hybrid options out there that are abit cheaper as well.

This is what I know and I can't say for sure I'm 100% right but her it is. It was Dale Earnharts death that really spurred the movement of the use of the Hans device, what I've heard is that the Hans device was around awhile before Dales death and they were trying to push for more racers to use them as they had proven that they did work but Dale himself was actually in opposition to them, which in the end is ironic because they say if he would have been wearing one he likely would have survived the wreck because what killed him was the head on force of the accident made his head go forward with such force that it severed his spinal cord where it connects to the base of the skull. What the Hans device and others do is to protect from exactly that by tethering to the helmet and holds your head in such an impact so it doesn't fly forward with such force. I've heard Dale told people he didn't want to use the unit because it looked like it could hang you. I think by this time it is just common sense to use one, there not cheap but when it comes to racing I'd say safety is the 1 thing you should spend whatever is necessary for.

I remember this picture in Open Wheel from the mid-80s. If you look closely, you'll see the seat only goes about as high as Doug's shoulder blades and doesn't appear to wrap around the rib cage. Today you don't see anyone without at least a high-back seat that goes as high as their head and wraps around their ribs, if not a full-containment seat. I'm not sure how many racers used even a basic neck collar back then (like they make you wear in kart racing). Safety has come a long way in 30 years.

Their neckbraces back then was their Left & Right Shoulders.

Didin't notice the seat, but you're right. I'm not a driver, but I'm assuming even helmet technology has come a long way from what Doug is wearing here.

Pretty sure that was taken at a track in Florida. They only ran that paint job during the February races down there.

Back in the early 80s.We didn't wear neck braces,alot didnt wear gloves and we used single wrap low back seats.Think in about 86 you started seeing double wrap low backs.First high backs didnt come out till Brad Doty got hurt at Eldora.In 88 I believe.We did use helmet restraints and neck collars starting in the early 90s.ya safty has come along way in last 30 years.

This thread reminds me of a story that a guy who helped Jim Nace early in his career told me. He told me that the first time that they went to Eldora that they were in the pits getting the car ready. Doug Wolfgang walked up and ask if they were from Pa. They said yes. Jim was getting ready to go out for hotlaps and Doug ask him if he wasn't going to wear a neck brace. Jim said "I never wear a neck brace. As Doug walked away he said "you should wear a neck brace". Jim had a pretty good finish and at end of the night Doug came by to congradulate him. Doug ask where Jim was and the guys said "he's layin in the trailer, he can't hold his head up."

The picture is from the one & only Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX during the spring race right after Florida speedweeks. I always loved the Weikert 29 Beefmobile from TV & pictures... this race was the first time I saw it in person. I was actually really disappointed in its appearance both from the stands & in the pits. Wasn't really a fan of the short tanks like the Howells 4 ran. Funky blue... not the usual red, white & blue beauties that team ran. Car looks pretty freaking awesome now lol! With age comes wisdom I guess.

agreed two very special cars to me also, they both stick to mind, neckbraces!, ha!, ya, look at that seat!, Ive ate sloppy joes and chips off a paper plate bigger than that, Truly back then they were the cowboys of the sport..

look closely at his arm restaints, past the elbows makes for better clearance, but does virtually nothing for restaining your forarm from extending beyond your lap/chest area, I have my retaints sewn in to my suit, just one less thing to monkey with and I know their in the correct spot. Again, none of these "good Ideas" wouldn't have sprouted from bad ones. Amen for that.
