Terry McCarl Scores $4,000 Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Show at 34 Raceway!

(Bill W) September 24, 2011 – Terry McCarl led from green to checker to claim the Monster Energy ™ Sprint Car Series stop at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa on Saturday night. The win was McCarl's second of the year with the series, having won in May at the Jacksonville Speedway.

McCarl started outside row one, while pole-sitter and dash winner, Jordan Goldesberry, trailed the veteran early on. By lap five, Jerrod Hull, Austin Johnson and Lynton Jeffrey compoleted the top five.

With seven laps down in the 25-lapper, Kody Kinser came to a stop on the frontstretch, bringing the caution flag. The restart put McCarl out front with some clean air. Jeffrey shot by Johnson for fourth with ten laps in the books, and Danny Smith was on the move from 12th to sixth.

By the halfway point, Smith was into fourth, trailing McCarl, Goldesberry and Hull, and by lap 18, he moved into the show position. One final slowdown occurred with four laps to go, when Johnson stopped with a flat right rear, spoiling a solid top ten run. The four lap dash saw no change in the top five positions as McCarl held on to score the $4,000 first place prize.

"It hasn't been our greatest year, so you appreciate it every time this happens," said McCarl in Victory Lane. "The car was good from hot laps. This track is great. It's one of my favorites in the world. I love this place, and I hope they can have more of these races. There are some great sprint car fans down here. I have to thank my car owner, Tony VerMeer, and Brad and Corey. They worked really hard this week. I wish Matt was here too."

Goldesberry's second place run was worth $2,500. "He was a little bit faster than we were," he said of McCarl. "We were catching him a bit in lapped traffic. I don't know if we've had a top five here at 34, so this is good. We want to end the year on a good note."

Smith earned hard-charger honors for his third place run. "Starting twelfth, this was a good finish," he said. "I moved the wing way back on the last restart, and we got too tight. The last four laps, I didn't have anything for the two guys in front of me."

Hull was fourth ahead of Jeffrey. Jimmy Hurley, Joey Moughan, Ben Wagoner, AJ Bruns and Chris Urish rounded out the top ten. Wagoner, Urish and Hurley won the heats, while Josh Schneiderman and Smith won the B mains. A wild second heat race saw Dustin Selvage get upside down after having nowhere to go and launching over another competitor. He was uninjured, but did not return.

I counted a grand total of 1 Farmington car at Jacksonville Friday for the Shaheen's show for more or less the same purse. I'm sure there will be plenty of Jacksonville/MOWA guys who make the trip to Farmington but in case it isn't posted on a sign down around Farmington, I-55 is a two way road.

I missed not having the Queens and the Shaheens race on the same weekend, it was always worth the trip. I hated to see the moowa race scheduled with the Shaheens race instead. Maybe next year things will work where these two shows can go back to back again.
