Rookie Smith Claims Second NCRA Southern Sport Modified Victory of Season!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – August 20, 2011 - Triple B Oil Field Services of Elk City, Oklahoma rookie of the year points leader Brandon Smith of Amarillo, Texas retook the lead at the races midway point to claim his second Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Smiley's Racing Products southern sport modified feature Saturday night at the same venue where he picked up his first career victory, 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas.
Enid, Oklahoma's Travis Johnson started on the front row for the twenty lap feature but it was third starting Smith who ducked underneath Johnson and outside front row starter Seth Schroer coming out of turn two to take the lead.
Smith's lead would only last one lap, however, as Johnson made the same pass coming out of turn two to take the lead going down the backstretch.
Johnson would open up a five car length lead over Smith by lap five with seventh starting Kip Hughes sitting third, followed by current series point's leader Chad McNamara and Schroer.
It appeared that Johnson would be poised to pick up his series leading third feature victory of the season near the races midway point, but distributor problems caused the #86J HRT Service Company sponsored/Carroll's Racing Engines powered Big Chief chassis to sputter for two laps before Smith drove underneath him down the front stretch to take the lead at the races midway point.
Johnson would fall back even further as Hughes, McNamara and eighth starting Robert Elliott would pass him for position. Johnson's night would end on lap fifteen as he retired to the pits for a nineteenth place finish.
Hughes, who just finished work on a brand new Dunsworth Machine motor one day earlier, tried his best to reel in the leader but could get no closer than five car lengths as Smith held on for his second feature victory of the season.
"I don't know, there is just something about this place we like," said Smith in victory lane. "I want to thank my mom and dad for hauling me all over the country to do something I love tremendously. I don't think we could have caught Travis because he was fast tonight. But I noticed he kinda bogged down and then I knew we had a shot."
Hughes settled for the runner up position while McNamara held on to his points lead with a third place finish. Elliott settled for fourth while "B" feature winner Brian Parker started fifteenth and worked his way through the field to round out the top five.
Cole Traugott worked his way up from his nineteenth starting position to claim eighth for the features best passing performance.
The eight lap heat races for the twenty-six car field were won by Schroer, Dalton Ragsdale and Mark Wilson while the ten lap "B" feature was won by the afore mentioned Traugott.
Triple B Oil Field Services rookie of the year contender Zachery Tippett of Newalla, Oklahoma, who has made every event thus far this season, had his night end early as his motor expired during hot laps.
The next scheduled event for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar NCRA southern sport modified division will take place on Saturday night, Octcober 8th. Tentative plans are to have one more show scheduled for the tour, this coming at the Speedways Inc. promoted Enid Speedway Winter Nationals. However dates and times are still pending at this time.
The series would like to take this time to thank their southern sport modified partners and sponsors for the 2011 race season:
