One of the better stories on the "Looking Back" page in NSSN, one of thousands of good ones really. This was 1970, 20 years before Rolex sponsorship and a couple years before it ran twice around the clock, 24 hours---unless your looking at a military clock. Was called the Daytona Continental the first 5 years and only 3 hours long. Rules state that you must cross the finish line at the end, under power. Gurney was 10 minutes ahead when he blew his engine with about 9 minutes to go, so he coasted to a few feet before the start/finish line and stopped just barely off the racing surface. Once time had expired, Gurney used the starter motor to move the car the few feet needed to cross the finish line, still one minute in front of 2nd place Phil Hill and 3rd placer Jim Hall in the original Chaparral. I wonder if you could get away with that today?
This was no doubt well before in-car communications so Gurney thought this up on-the-fly or maybe it had been done before, don't know. 77 years of National Speed Sport News? Too bad Chris Economaki couldn't find a buyer or maybe subscriptions had dropped or internet news competition was a problem?
Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

I remember when Dan pulled this off. Pretty heads up move. Not only racing with his right foot but also his brain. I am sure that some rules have been modified to keep any one else from doing it also. Some sort of safety thing, after all he stopped right below the flag stand on the banking. If it was NASCAR they would have thrown a yellow and towed him away.

I mentioned the 2nd and 3rd place cars, forgot about first. Gurney was driving the Arcerio Brothers Lotus.

In the 1980s Danny Ongais did the same thing, sitting on the apron for 20 minutes with a badly knocking engine until the clock expired.
The race was 24 Hours in 1969, when it went 24 I do not know.
The first Continental was in 1963.
