I have been wondering for a long time now. Why do races start so late? Why is it always 6 or 7 PM?
I have wondered is it to give people time to travel to the race? Well if that is the reasoning then you are making people travel late.
Is it because it cools down a little more? Ok if this is the case. Couldn't it still be bumped up by a hour or maybe 2 or 3? It still wouldn't be the hottest time of the day.
Or is it just because this is the way it's always been done?

I remember when many races used to be held during the day. But at least where I am (Missouri), it's just too hot in the Summer to start before about 7pm. It seems that many owners/promoters don't put the effort into track prep these days, so I would guess that the rubberdown tracks that we are seeing these days would be compounded (no pun intended) starting in the heat of the day. If a show is ran right, there is no reason to run past 10:30pm. Last night, LOS had over 100 cars in the pits. They started @ 7pm, had a 20 minute intermission and it was over at 10:20pm.

Im going to say track conditions make the start times, late, majority of tracks will keep moisture longer with the sun down , My other analogy is, there is something about seeing cars under lights , Kinda like the Movies, you never watch a movie in the theators with the lights on, and if a indirect lighting is used, it is commonly dimmed for the feature presentation , Im guessing the Human eye is less likely to be distracted at night when a black background is present , the eye is focused on action in sight easily , much rather than daytime. part of the show , I like the nite races (honestly I preferr Nascars night races, that is , if I were to begin relegiously watching Nascar?) just my thought....

Well, also think about the fans and drivers. Most work until 3pm - 6pm. So, on a Friday night race, there wouldn't be anyone in the stands or racing for a 2pm race because they'd all be at work. Unless they wanted to run the risk of getting fired, that would be my main reason to start later if I was a track promoter. Especially if a driver needs to travel. They might as well take the day off of work to get somewhere they need to travel to if the race started earlier. Brings in the money, fans, and drivers by running a later time.
