VENTURA RACEWAY - APRIL 7TH
(Oxnard, CA 4-2-07) Ventura Raceway continues its 2007 racing season at its Ventura County Fairgrounds facility this weekend April 7 at 5:30pm with a full night of exciting racing action. While the VRA 360 Sprints are away to race the first race in the 2007 VRA/Bandit Grand Slam Series at Bakersfield Speedway Ventura Raceway fans will be treated to USAC Midgets, USAC/VRA Ford Focus Midgets, VRA Junior Focus Midgets, IMCA Modifieds, VRA Sport Compacts and Junior Midgets. These exciting classes will stage a night of open wheel racing that will keep all in attendance on the edge of their seats from the opening heats to the final feature events.
Headlining the night's action will be the powerful, high speed USAC Midgets. These racers are the cars that made Ventura Raceway nationally famous in the early 1990's when they ran the ESPN Thunder Series here. Jeff Gordon, Sleepy Tripp, Wally Pankratz, Jason Leffler, Billy Boat, Tony Stewart, Mike Bliss and a host of other drivers raced midgets here. Now a younger generation of up and coming stars are here tonight to race for the glory. Leading the USAC midgets into Saturday night's action is point leader Chris Rahe. He holds a 13 point advantage over second place runner Danny Stratton. Other drivers in the top five in points include Darren Hagen, Scott Pierovich and Jerry Coons Jr.
Nick Carlson will lead the USAC/VRA Ford Focus Drivers into Saturday's competition. He holds the points lead over Nic Fass, 2006 series champion Bobby Michnowicz, Walt Johnson and Dennis Howell after the first two races of the new season. Carlson took the win here on March 17, while Fass took the win at their last race at Bakersfield Speedway on March 24.
Also returning to action Saturday night will be the IMCA Modifieds. Last weeks event saw past IMCA track Champion Randy McGraw take his first win in 2007, He defeated a stellar field of 19 IMCA racers to get the hard fought win. Current points leader Steve Smith finished fourth last week and will be there to try to keep out front of the fine drivers that have made the 2007 IMCA season the best ever here at Ventura. Other drivers scheduled to appear include 2006 Champion Jack Parker, up and coming drivers Joe Weaver who had a strong third place finish last week, Austin Rodarte who finished fourth and Bill Waltman who has been a the top of the California IMCA points standings this season.
Our last adult class for this week will be the VRA Sport Compacts. So far in 2006 Joel Chavez has run hard and strong in his front wheel drive number 20 Acura. He leads the other drivers in this class into tonight, atop the point's ladder. Other drivers who will be trying to catch him include 2006 champion Jack Hoyt, Greg Raap, David Peterson and Randal Dougan.
Also appearing on the racing card this weekend are two of our junior classes. VRA Junior Focus and Junior Midgets will be here to entertain you. Junior Midgets will run on the infield track. Point's leader and 2006 series champion Christian Copley will be going for three wins in a row this week. In Junior Focus racing, Arizona driver Alex Bowman took the opening nigh win over Dakota Kershaw and Austin Smith. He will be back tonight to try to make it two in a row.
Front Gates will open at 3:30pm with Junior Midgets taking to the track at 3:30 for their heats and warm-ups. Adult classes take to the track at 4:00pm with warm-ups. Racing will get under way at 5:30pm. Admission to the night's event is $14.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors/military and juniors with school ID cards, Kids 7-12 are $5.00 and kids 6 and under are free.
