Along with dealing with a really, really bad virus (H1N1? Only my
lab technician knows for sure...), I've been busy this week finishing
up a fairly lengthy piece on sprint car marketing. I tried to get the
opinion of some people who know motorsports marketing but could give
something of an "outsiders" perspective on the challenges and
opportunities ahead for sprint car racing.
Take a read and let me know your feedback.

ya know i read this piece, and i gotta say very well written. it brings up a lot of good points and realities that dirt track racing, and all racing, is facing these days. I actually like one idea in there for my local track. the grass area bring your own food thing, i think a lot of tracks could benefit from that. i have heard of a few tracks with that in place already and they seem to be working out well.
anyways, again i must say good job. I hope this economy doesnt turn our tracks into deserts, but from the sound of it, if some promoters get up and work together this bad economy has the possibility to create even better sponsors and racing all together.
thank you for your piece.

I think some tracks would be hesitant to open up a "picnic" area - since they would say that takes away from their concessions money. But I'm not going to lie - I've snuck food and drinks into race tracks more often than I can count (especially so I didn't have to drink the soda made with the sulphur tap water from Kings), and many tracks are getting hurt on concessions because they don't put the effort into putting out good food at decent prices.
I think it's a good idea, especially if you can outsource to outside vendors. Get a local sandwich shop to put together "picnic baskets" that include a sandwich, chips, cookies and drink for a fair price. They can set up a stand and sell it - the track gets a portion of each sale without having to devote resources to it. Plus, since it's ready made, the lines should move quickly, making fans happy.

i agree fully, where they lose a little on concessions, if they actually get creative it can work out prefect for both sides, fans and promoters.
