Got a call a little bit ago from a friend at K-Ville-said he had never seen anything like it-less people, motorhomes than he had ever seen Sat. of the Nationals.

And you are attributing this "low" number to what?

He didn't say but I assume it is because of the new rule for 2009...the DRF! Frown

Haha, of course. It has nothing to do with the economy or anything of the sort. It's the dreaded fuel stop. We'll have to see about the crowd tonight to see if this thread is accurate.

I was walking around the track moments ago and its true, no doubt the fan count is down. The main factor has to be the economy IMO. Ive been sitting in the same seats for 12 years, Sec I-Row28 and for the first time ever there has been empty seats all around us this week. I'm sure things will be different next year being that its the 50th Anniversary of the Nats. For all of us that are here I hope we have an excellent all round race tonight. Go TK and Stevie!!!!

Wow! What a wierd coincidence! That same thing has happened at our local tracks, and they don't even have a fuel stop! Do you think it's some kind of conspiracy? I mean, NASCAR crowds are down, and they have.......fuels stops!

The red flag stop is not that big of a deal. They are going to wait to see what happens. if there is a red flag 10 or so laps into it thats when they will do the fuel stop so there wont be a break in the action. But they funny thing is all you nascar fans will sit and watch a race for 2 hours. whats so fun about that. they pull in the pits and everything else you guys dont complain about that do ya? Why make a big fit when you be able to see 10 extra laps for the same ticket prices as years before. Thats the problem somebody always wants to bitch about something.

The people have spoken...what a line of crap! Probably half the fans there have not even considered the chance of a red flag pit stop or give a dang about it.

Of course the counts are down, these have been darn hard times for many people. Even those fortunate enough to have kept their jobs have found their hours cut or plants idled for weeks.

Racing is discretionary spending for people and travel/hotel/gas/food/tix to the Nationals can eat up close to $1000 really fast for 4 days. Its not easy to justify that when things are pretty tight, especially for a family.

The forum lizards always seem revel when things things are bad

fuel stops in sprint car racing suck because unlike nascar thy are not necessary and are a wast of time----there was a time when sprint cars didn't run fuel tanks that were made for midgets and it was part of the drivers ability to compensate for the fuel being used during a race---i'v enjoyed sprint car racing all my life (50yrs) and in that time 2 Major things have come along to take some of the excitement out of it (dont get me wrong it's still very exciting ) #1 wings i can remember a driver saying if thy start running wings on our sprint cars every super-modified jockey around will start thinking thy can drive a race-car and just look at where dirt track super-modified racing is today #2 fuel stops i know when thy have a fuel stop at my local track 1/4 of the stands gets up and leaves---and no i don't think fuel stops have anything to do with fan count this year at the nationals this event is to big for that

I stopped in to Knoxville on Thursday night enroute to some non wing racing at Rock Rapids last night and tomorrow night.

What I found was no atmosphere at all,no waiting to get in (There were always lines to get in) gouging ($1.50 for a cup if ice at one vender) and lots of empty seats. I sat for years in section A in the 30th row on the aisle. I was able to walk up and buy a ticket for section A row 29 2nd seat in from the aisle. Always people sitting nearby, but not this yr.

To be fair a couple heats were ok,and the A main wasnt to bad.

Still,I'm not planning on going back anytime soon.

Does anyone know where I can find a pay-out for the nationals? I remember seeing one a few years ago that lists what all the races pay each night?

Sprinters can not go 30 or 40 laps on tank of fuel; so a fuel stop is the right thing to do!! JMO

The real looser in the low crowd count may be all of us at home hoping to continue watching the event Live on SPEED.

The ratings obviously can't be too great to begin with as SPEED proved that a few years back when they packed up after the rainout on Saturday.... they don't need Knoxville to survive.

Someobody somewhere is punching the calculator to see if getting rid of Live televsion is a possible answer to get attendance back up.

Lets face it, statement or not, there is nothing good about the crowd numbers going down.

Lets talk about the lack of anything any different than 5 years ago. I mean its the same stuff year after year. The rule book has taken away what made our sport great. Going to see who could build a better mouse trap has been gone for years. Gibson never mentions the Dodges, there are no Fords, the chevies are all built by the same 4 guys, the chassis all look the same because of all the rules etc etc. The legend drivers are old men now so we better get some cool wicked fast equipment back. Wed should have been radical hammer down barely holding on the steering wheel shit and instead it sucks because anyone with more than a weeks worth of experience can ride around wide open within 3 tenths of the fastest guy in the country.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I can be corrected, but...

The track pays for Speed to be there. A few years back when they had the rainout on Saturday, I believe Speed packed up because Cappy told them to. He did not want to pay them even more money to be there and show it on tape delay. He may do that again. I know the officials were far less worried about Speed tonight than they were about getting the race in. I heard people numerous times talking about how Speed would just have to keep up with them. They were also going to forego the intermission and driver introductions. Personally that made me happy since I just want to see them race.

The whole purpose of having the live television coverage is sponsorship. It is much easier to sell sponsorship for your track, event, race team, etc. if there is television exposure. This is part of why Nascar teams get more money than World of Outlaw teams get more money than USAC teams get more money than local racers. Just wait for next year. With the 50th anniversary, I expect it to be an all out circus!
