I'm pretty much a poor boy. None the less. Two years ago i swapped and traded til i got hold of a pretty good 92 Chevy p/u. Spent 3000.00 bucks initially and another 1000.00 bucks over the last two years on it. I did all the work including paint and body myself.I gave it to my daughter about a year and a half ago. This is a very nice truck. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Her mother called me today and wants to trade it for a new Mini Cooper and let them crush the truck.

Now, I'm pissed off. But what is your opinion on the matter? What would you do? I'm ready to explode right now so I told her that i would talk to them about it this weekend.

I'm not keen on the idea of my daughter driving one of those mini coffins anyhow and she already knows this.

Bring it on people. Tell me what you think. I want an outside perspective on this matter.

Thank you very much.

Sounds to me like that "cash for clunkers" deal they got going on.....you say it's a very nice truck. I seriously doubt it would get crushed if it was nice. if they are going to crush it, then it really shouldn't matter what kind of vehicle she takes and trades in.....tell you what...I got an ole $300.00 beater I'll trade for the truck, that way you won't feel so bad.

If it gets traded as cash-for-clunkers,it goes to the crusher. That is my understanding. If it were a beater I wouldn't give a shit. I'm not accustomed to throwing away good equipment just cuz some idiot says it was old. And then try to justify that act by saying it wasn't efficient. That's bullshit. Try to haul anything in that mini coffin. Now that's really efficient.

I wanna know something,

What gives with all the kids today NEEDING a/c, cd players, complete paint jobs, 22" wheels, etc?

My first 'running' vehicle was a '55 Chevy truck that jumped out of 3rd gear! I added the $100 stereo system later!

If she gets the Mini, she'll talk someday about the '92 Chevy truck her Dad gave her one time and reminince about how sweet it was!

As far as I understand the physical condition of the "clunker" doesn't matter one bit. It's all based on year and gas gas milleage. I don't think it's a good trade for a nice older and safer pickup to be destroyed for one of these crappy ass over sees jobies that are rolling coffins. You know they only do crash tests against vehicles of the same stature, sedan vs sedan. So the mini cooper would be a great car if only other mini coopers where on the road, however there are still millions of pickups and semis that share the road. Jmo

I kind of feel the same way with the kids these days. when I was raised I started working at 14 and dont think I've stopped since. People spoil their kids and dont teach them VALUES and earning a car is a big step. Getting jobs and earning somrthing is the only way they will really take care of their valued Items. "Oh wait a minute" both my boys have race cars {never mind}. Fork over the cash Dont crush the truck even if it's a chevy! But make her earn it with Grades or Work or something. imho

Sounds like to me if you and her mom are not together and the truck is yours anyway (correct me if I am wrong about that). What difference does it make the mom probably don't like you anyway, I've got EX'S too. Thats just the way some of them are. Trust me I've got (4) 2boys 27 1 girl 17 and 1 girl 14. It will piss your kid off but they will get over it! DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

But if you are still with the mom flip a coin!!!!

I'm 27 and I feel the same way about kids these days lol. At this rate - to see "values" in minors pretty soon one will have to go to a museum wink

imVho - I don't see anything that wrong with her wantin' something other than the truck - it's the mini cooper that sucks LOL. Those things are like rolling coffins. Granted - get hit by a semi and you're toast no matter what you're in - but if you're vehicle can't stand up to a speed bump or some various small sign .......hmmmm 2nd thoughts. In fact, I doubt those mini coopers could stand up to a fart in the wind - let alone the bullshit "Clear Sky Hurricanes" we get here in the plains of Oklahoma lol.

Now I'm being more comical than anything lol. But I do think there are several fine while still "efficient" vehicles better than a mini cooper. Whereas they performed admirably in "The Italian Job" - I'm still not sold. But if she digs it that much - just make sure you get some heavy ass rims to help keep that thing on the ground when the wind blows! lmao. get some weights from JD to put on it! lol.

Thanks to all your opinions. I've calmed down a bit now.

Hate to see a good truck go to waist. Especially after working so hard and spending that much cash on it. Yes, to me, that's alot of cash. I see alot of junkers come and go from my work. These people would kill to have a vehicle this nice.

Oh, no she don't live with me. They live across town and her mother is married. they both have excellent jobs and spend money like it's water. I'm not jealous of that at all. She just keeps undermining me in ways to makew herself look like a good samaritan and me the shitty dad. Which couldn't be any further from the truth. My ex said they wanted to do something for her since she is a scholar student and good all around kid. Why don't they send her to collage on the money instead of buying her a new damn car. Don't get me wrong. i love my child dearly. But I wouldn't raise her this way if she lived with me. I came by everything the hard way also. I've been working since a young child, first with my dad and then on to other things.

A Cooper... Dammitt!!

Dale. if it was an ol Ford I'd say crush the FoMoCo (remember that one from the 60's?) but you can't waste a good ol Chevy.

Has Mom or Daughter stopped to consider Insurance Premiums for a "under 25 year old driver" that's something else to think about, I bet the Insurance Premium will equal or exceed the car payment. And like you said do you really want you Daughter in one of those death traps. Keep the Chevy and buy her a Sprint Car they are much safer.

With that said, I have never or will I ever buy a young kid a new car or truck not being mean but like I have told mine and with 2 to go, Your first vech. is a learning tool because you will ding it, scratch it all to hell, or wreck it anyway.

So I have and would tell my ex hell no!!! Buy something else and keep the truck!!!

Sorry but this subject fired me up "MEMORIES"

Now Allen, I had a 1967 FORD 150 that me and my dad worked hard hwy and pasture miles for over 15 years and it's still going strong!!! So if you want a work truck from that era buy a ford. But if you want a sissy truck from that era buy a chevy LMAO!!!!

yah uncle, I mentioned that and the fact that the payments would far exceed fuel costs for the truck also. Ex said she'd pay for it. I also mentioned the fact that after warranty expires the cost of repairs would be astronomical for a BMW. She says no problem. I know this, if I'm called to look into any problems with the shit box the answer will be NO.

In a way I feel like she's slapping me in the face with her money and doing it through our daughter. Makes me even more bitter about it.

I'm gonna have to agree with sleepy on that. I have a '71 chevy single cab that my dad and I have spent many nights rebuilding and it was my daily driver when I turned 16 and for a couple good years after that. Even though it isn't my primary vehicle anymore, nobody could give me enough to get it away from me. I had a blast building it with dad and still tinkering on it with him.

Been in a marriage gone south and I know all about this stuff. I'm not going to go off and rant because it would be ugly. But I will agree with sleepy and strongly suggest getting keys and title and getting that truck back ASAP. On those clunker trades they fill the engine with silicone and run it 'til it seizes. Then to the crusher. I hope this truck doesn't become one of those, just on a matter of principle.

Thanks everyone. I can see that rational thinking goes on with you people as well.

I'll be talking to my daughter tomorrow. We'll be getting some things straight. Her thinking is first thing on the agenda. Then we'll discuss the truck. It won't be going to the crusher. I was against that in the first place.

Gas milage vs. logic. I hope logic prevails but if it don't she's a foot. Then momma can buy her what she wants.

When the price of gasoline goes back up to around $4.00 per gallon, the savings one will experience driving a vehicle 20K plus miles per year that gets 35+miles per gallon versus 10-15mpg will save enough cash to pay cash for several of those older gas guzzler trucks and vehicles.

One will find that the liability insurance on a newer safer vehicle equipped with air bags, roll bars and anti intrusion enforcement is much lower than the older vehicles not so equipped.

Best to get rid of the older, heavy, and less safe vehicles as soon as possible.
