Tuesdays with TMAC – On to the Desert!

(Bill W) February 27, 2007 – After Terry McCarl's successes at Tulare last weekend, it's on to the Arizona desert this weekend. The World of Outlaws will tackle USA Race Park near Tucson, Arizona on Friday, and the legendary Manzanita Speedway near Phoenix on Saturday.

TMAC still holds the one-lap track record of 13.127 seconds on the USA Race Park 3/8-mile clay oval, having set that standard on March 4, 2006. The last WoO race at the venue saw McCarl's charging style at its best as he finished third after starting in row eight on October 21, 2006. He remembers, "There was a red flag after one lap, and I came from toward the back and caught the leaders later on, but we couldn't catch another yellow or red to really challenge for the lead."

McCarl is looking for great things in Tucson for both himself, and the fans. "It's a very beautiful facility, the grandstands are very nice. It's a great place for the fans and the drivers."

The Cactus Classic will take place Saturday at Manzanita Speedway. McCarl will tackle the historical ½ mile semi-banked oval after two top fives in 2006 action there. When asked about getting back out on a bigger track, Terry relates, "With the experience we have on the road right now, there isn't a track I don't like to be honest, and there isn't one I don't think we can do well at."

Tulare Top Fives!

A pair of top fives headlined last weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California. The consistency saw McCarl leave the "Golden State" sitting second in WoO points early in the long season ahead.

Terry talked about his fifth place run on Friday. "The first night we weren't great. It was one of those heavy, rough California racetracks. We were lucky…we were running fourth (in the A main) and had a rear-end break (bolt in the ring and pinion) with about ten laps to go. Fortunately the hole it created was high enough that the oil didn't' drain out, so we were lucky to finish, let alone get a top five out of it."

Night two saw TMAC charge from the fifth row to a runner-up spot at the checkers, with what could have been the fastest car on the track. "We started in the fifth row…Let me say, Tim Kaeding is 'The King' of the California tracks and to be able to catch up to him and race for the lead was a lot of fun for me because that's not my style of track, and I think that shows you how well rounded our team is right now." Unfortunately, after the checkers, the bottom shelled out on a motor just four races old, making the run bittersweet.

Contact between McCarl and Joey Saldana late in the race in a battle for fourth, got people on the edge of their seats as well. Circumstances built afterwards that both fans in attendance may not have seen, and those listening in didn't necessarily hear about. "I don't mind getting booed (author's note: Hello Huset's!). Unfortunately, people didn't realize what all was happening, just listening or hearing about it on the internet. There were extenuating circumstances to my anger on the mic after the race." TMAC has put it behind him as he readies for Arizona.

Though the incident was blown into a big issue for some, McCarl sees the bigger picture…the promoter at heart sees this long World of Outlaws season shaping into what may be the best of all time. "This is the tip of the iceberg. The fans are in for some great racin' this year, and with all the heated debates going on this is just the beginning. There are so many clashes and rivalries that are brewing out here on the road with drivers and with mechanics. We're all competitive people as racecar drivers, and crewmembers are just as competitive as we are. You wouldn't be out there if you weren't competitive, and when you're competitive, you want to win, and as tough as the competition is this year...ya know, I don't see anyone dominating heavily, and that makes for other people getting upset. If you're not winning, the sponsors aren't going to be happy, wives are not happy, the crew's not happy, and then you're not gonna be happy, so I think this is gonna be a great year for the fans with a lot of excitement, and I think its just starting to brew. I'm excited to see how it's going to shake out too!"

In"Terry"gation

Kevin from Springfield, IL asks: Do you do any sightseeing if you've got several days between races like this week?

TMAC answers: "When my boys are with me (Austin and Carson), we've really tried. The last couple years we've had the motorhome, and went to a few places. We went to Arlington National Cemetery, and all the stuff around Washington, D.C. Normally…that's the thing a lot of fans don't understand…most of the time when you're on the road racing, you don't have time for a lot of sightseeing. You see a lot of exit ramps to some great places so you know where they're at! I've been fortunate the last few years to have a good enough crew that I can take a little time off for family, but we really can't do a whole lot of that."
