Maybe if they payed more than $5 grand to win if may draw some bigger teams. Biggest problem is the only reason most teams even venture out to Iowa is for the Nationals. Why race with the chance of tearing up your equipment when the big picture is just a couple of days away?

Lets face the facts, when this race first came together a guy had a chance to come from the back for the $50,000. If you got to see Jac do it, be greatful because I don't think you will ever see it again? We are lucky to see anyone win off of the first few rows anymore let alone come from 24th. They need to come up with a new format, or a new twist in trying to win the big bucks? JMO

Schatz had a great chance a pulling off the challenge last year until a broken torsion stop (not positive) ended his night. I believe he was up to 4th with a handful of laps left. It definately would have been exciting. i was disappointed to hear that Dobmeir didn't take the challenge.......isn't that what it's all about???? Besides anyone that takes the challenge has the majority of the eyes on him for the entire race. Hell if nothing else....it gives us something to talk about.

The purpose being in Iowa in August is to run the Knoxville Nationals, not to destroy your car and/or get hurt, especially if you have little wingless experience.

Why single out Mark Dobmeier?

Where was Steve Kinser? Has HE won the Osky Front Row Challenge???

Hate to burst your bubble but the FRC last night was a winged race... the wingless show is tonight...

I don't blame Dobmeier for not taking the challenge... he knew he had a really fast racecar and the biggest payday of the year ahead of him ($5k) if something stupid didn't happen (like lapped cars wrecking ahead of him when he had a straight-a-way lead). He also knew that another really fast racecar was starting beside him who more than likely was going to take the challenge. Direct quote from Dobmeier as well: "If he (Joey) doesn't take the challenge, I will". It was obviously tough luck for Dobmeier and the entire Lundstra team, but they were ridiculously fast - which has to give them a lot of confidence going into the Nationals... go get 'em boys!

-on a side note, I thought this was one of the better FRC's in recent memory. Wish there were more cars (where was DeWease?), but all in all it was pretty good - woud've been better had Joey not had his problem - but not bad.

I agree with Chilly, this was one of the better FRC winged races. SK and others have traditionally sat this one out saving their health and equipment for the Nationals. You don't need 90 cars for a good race, 25-30 quality cars is all ya need and that's what we got. I hope Dobmeier can get that car back in shape for the Nationals, that car was an absolute rocket! Nobody could touch him last night until disaster struck. Let's hope tonights wingless race is just as exciting and safe for all.

I've skipped this race the last 3 years for a few reasons....

Race usually isn't that good. The seats in the stands are not wide enough (and i'm 6' weigh 215). It's typically a really hot day so combine that with tight seating and that covered grandstand blocking the air. By not going it's a nice break in the middle of a LONG WEEK.

I think the format is good. And you wouldn't want much more than 30 cars. It would eat up the track that much more and drag out time trials. I've seen a couple of good races there with Haud winning and Lasoski making a couple of runs from the tail.

This is race is more about the party and entertainment factor. And if you go to the infield and party, you're guaranteed to have a good time. It pays $5,000 to win and that's nothing to sneeze at. It doesn't attract names like Steve Kinser, so what? If you attract 5 or 6 top teams and the rest are all regulars from Knoxville, it makes for a better show anyway when you throw one of those top guys in the back. But to pay $10k or $15k to win would be dumb on McCarl's part. That's just money out of his pocket. You have a captive fan base, he's taking advatnage of it, and good for him!

T-Mac puts on a couple of great events over there, and I'm glad he does. He's done a lot for the sport by starting these 2 races, and now Knoxville has joined in by adding the 360 Nationals earlier in the week. I just wish Knoxville would do something different with the Friday Nationals program. Maybe run a one night non-wing show instead. To say I get my $40 worth that night is crazy.

Could always try and get that going for the 50th Nationals.........after all, isn't that how the Nationals were run then.......without a wing?? Why don't someone talk to the powers that be about it? Cappy has said before that the 50th will be big (ie: BIG).

I would say car count is affected more by what the pay is for 2nd to 24th more than the $5000 to win. I have never seen the entire payoff.

I believe if you look it up you will find the very first Knoxville Nationals was won with a wing.

A little history lesson about Marion Robinson . The brains behind the Knoxville Nationals.

It was Robinson who conceived of the Knoxville Nationals in 1961. At that time is was called the First annual Super-Modified National Championship. It was a two-day event back then with time trials only on Friday and racing on Saturday. The event became such a success that by 1966 it had grown to a 3-day affair. In 1973 Robinson convinced the fairboard to allow 'wings' at the Nationals in order to entice more of the Eastern cars to race at the event. (After the 1961 season, 'wings' or 'air scoops' as they were called back then, were banned at Knoxville. The 'air scoop' had found its way to Knoxville during the first Nationals. No one around here knew about the 'foil', and many owners added the new 'appendage' after the event was history. However, the 'air scoop' continued to be legal at many tracks around the nation, including the hotbeds of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and New York). Again, at Knoxville, the wing was made illegal after the 1973 season was concluded.
