I noticed some of the wingless USAC cars running "upswept" headers. What's the purpose or advantage to these?

Eddie Tafoya jr.  was the only car I noticed  with inverted headers. I'm not an engine builder but maybe it helps keep engine temps cooler, some say its to keep mud off the headers or from getting them smashed or dented. Seems like it would be much louder for the driver than a standard set up. If it was the hot ticket everyone would do it. Then again, if you are only looking at the headers you may not be noticing something else on the car.

I seem to remember Damion Gardner running them and saying it kept heat off of the tires.
