Reading about Larsonfan and the wasps got me to thinking. What is your best memory from a racetrack that has nothing or very little to do with racing?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

A group of us, 12 or 15, met a Williams grove on the back stretch early (4 or 4:30) for a bachelor party, in the far corner by the woods before the races on a Friday night.  We partied pretty hard.  In fact so hard that it was about 7:30 until any of us realized that no other fans had showed up or any race cars.  Finally decide to find out what was going on.  It was one of those nights that they cancelled prematurely and we just never thought they would have.  So we hung out and finished off our buzz.  And actually invited some others who joined in. It was a good time.

In the spring of 2004 we had Easter brunch reservations at a restaurant in Sidney OH when we saw  Earl & Bernice Baltes walk in. There was quite a wait for them so we invited them to sit at our table. I'm sitting next to Earl listening to story after off color-story that were very politically incorrect and hilarious.

Taking my son to his first sprint car race at Attica 2yrs ago. The whole day was a day I'll remember for the rest of my life. My wife had to work all day so I took him to an Easter egg hunt (easter was the next day on sunday), then we went to the zoo for a couple hours, then while he took a nap for a couple hours I drove up to Attica. We stopped and ate at the Backroads diner first (which I recommend for anyone going up to Attica) then took him over to the track. I don't really know too many details of the race itself other than Spencer Bayston won, but I was just watching my son's reaction to everything. I remember getting there right before hotlaps started and the first set of cars came onto the track just as we walked in. I stood in turn 1 holding him and I videoed his reaction on my phone when the cars started going. His eyes were big, had a little grin on his face, his head kept moving as the cars went around the turn. The whole night I probably watched him more than I watched the racing and just watched at how much fun he was having as he watched the races. Probably the best night at the races I have ever had and I hardly watched any of the race because it was too much fun watching him watch it.

Back in the 70s I would camp out behind the Arizona barn at the Nationals.  It was always hot and dry in Iowa in August, and it was hell pounding in little stakes on my pup tent.  Invariably it would rain of the nights and all the stakes would pull out in the wind and rain and the whole tent would collapse in a wet mess.

I also remember waking in the middle of the night to see lights flashing by my tent over and over. I quickly realized it was a guy doing donuts in his car maybe 20 feet from the tent and the flashing lights were his headlights!

Great memories... would not change a thing!

During the early days of the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, probably the 4th or 5th year, they had some sort of intermission entertainment.  This particular year they had what they billed as the "Slide For Life".  They used a brand new Mustang Convertable with a long rope attached to its rear bumber to pull, yes a live human daredevil on a sled board through a section of track that was covered with a flamable liquid (perhaps jet fuel).  Now, what could possibly go wrong here?  Well, the Mustang driver got into the flamable solution, slinging it under the Mustang, the Mustang caught on fire and the area drenched with liquid had much more of the flamable solution than needed.  They finally got the fire out on the Mustang but the fire on the track burned for a good while, completely filling the arena with black smoke.  This was all before thay installed the huge exhaust fans at the top of the arena.  What an event, and I'm sure one that Emmitt and Lanny llwont forget.  Was anyone else viewing this post remember this?  And, if I'm not describing it as it happened, speak up because it was most likely more than 30 years ago.

About 15 years ago when my son was 12, I took him and his buddy to the races for the weekend at Williams Grove. We were camping out in the front strech and to kill some time during the day, I had them go into the corn fields across the street from the track to pick some corn for us for dinner. The two of them spent an hour fooling around in the fields but came back with an arm full of freshly picked corn. The next day they both came down with severe poison ivy. His buddy's case was so bad he missed three days of school the following week. His mother was none too happy with me and it took a few years before she let him come to the races with us again.

We are at a race in the late 90's so me and my buddies are in our 20's.  We are walking through the campground and my buddy, Chris, reaches to pick up a wallet on the ground.  As he reaches for it, it moves and he looks up and sees a guy with a fishing pole pulling the wallet back in.  Chris laughs for days, weeks and months.  So.......

The next year he brings a fishing pole and decides he is going to do the same trick.  He sets out a wallet with a $20 bill hanging out of it, sits down on a five-gallon bucket, puts on his fishing hat, and thinks he's gonna be funny.  3 or 4 people walk by, look at him, and say "nice try dipshit".  Mind you, we have all been drinking all day like it's our job at this point.

It starts to lightly rain, then a bit harder.  We all go inside the camper, but not Chris.  He sits on that bucket, in the middle of a hayfield campground, with his fishing hat on. We are watching outside and by this point it's pouring.  We are already laughing.  People are running for their lives to get back to their campers.  Next thing we know, Chris jumps up, looking like he just caught a marlin, pole bent over and jumping!  He got one.  A sprinting passerby got caught in his line and was limping on one leg, looking back in complete shock!  If you could see the look on the guy's face as Chris chased him shouing  "your in my line!  Your in my line!!"  The pole was just jumping with every hop the tangled "fish" took.  There wasn't a body of water within 10 miles of us.  The man was very confused.  We all about pissed ourselves!!!!

Oh man! Where do I start :-)? The one I can remember off the top of my head and one of the more general audiences appropriate is the year (can't remember which of course) but it was some time during the mid '90's is a weekend at Calistoga where the second night rained out. A lot of us were camped out there and the race was canceled early enough that we all could have left but I think pretty much everybody stayed. It rained steady all afternoon and into the evening. Some nut got out on the track and started doing laps in his minivan. The promoter came around to the front stretch to go after him but the nut's buddies opened the back gate and he got away. That ended up being one of the best parties ever over at Gary Willey's camp and one of the nice things about it is that since we started so early we were all able to go to bed at a decent hour!

Leaving Husets Speedway one night, I heard someone calling for help in the motorcyle parking area. Another guy and I ran over there and found a guy trapped under a big motorcycle. We got the bike off him and stood it up. He wanted to get back on the bike but was very drunk. The other guy convinced him not to, and to go find his friends to get a ride. When we walked out of the shadows of the bike area, I found out the other guy helping was Danny Lasoski.

Little moments happen all of the time.   Just last night, I had one.   It was time for the national anthem and everyone rised.   A gentleman a couple rows in fromt of me did a miliitary salute when the anthem was being played.   He was very striking with his exact form.   Apparently, his little daughter (4-5) thought the same thing.  She knew that she needed to be standing and have her right arm over her heart.   So she continued to do that, but with her left arm she did a military salute with her left arm.   As she was doing this, she kept looking up at her father to make sure her form was correct.  It was a very cute moment.

Bought a small grill for our camping excursion at The Kings Royal one year. Had some Burgers & Hotdogs that we had left over & wrapped in tin foil in it. We get back to the campsite to find said wrapped food on the ground & the grill gone.

Moral of the story is : You can teach a man to eat but that only lasts until nature takes it course but if you take the utensil that can cook said eats on he can eat until said utensil rusts out !!!
