SEXTON/GATLIN RACING ENTERING FOUR CARS THIS SATURDAY AT BARONA!
(Lakeside, CA, May 15, 2019) When the POWRi California Lightning Sprint Car Series takes to the track at the Barona Speedway this Saturday, May 18th, Sexton/Gatlin Racing will be expanding as it enters a fourth car into the competition. Joining father Brent Sexton and his sons Dalton and Grant on Saturday will be San Diego’s David Bezio.
For Saturday’s event, Bezio, who formerly raced in the CLS and USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series,’ will be in the same #2 that NASCAR Truck Series regular Sheldon Creed drove to an impressive third-place finish at Barona on April 6th. It will be the past CLS main event winner’s first racing appearance in an open-wheel car in several years.
For Dalton and Grant, it will be their second appearance at Barona in 2019. At the first race there in April, Dalton stayed around the top five all race long before being shoved into the wall late in the going. That knocked him out of competition and saddled him with a frustrating 18th place finish. Likewise, Grant got off to a good start in the same main event and was in fourth place when he hit a rut in turn four on the sixth lap and broke a radius rod. Unable to steer, he clipped the front straight wall and turned over. Fortunately, he was uninjured, but the car was done for the night. He got credit for 20th place.
While it will be the second race of the year at Barona for the Sexton siblings, like Bezio, it will be Brent Sexton’s first race at the track this season. Plagued with mechanical ills, he sat out the April race on the San Diego County dirt oval. The Tennessee native, who has two CLS championships to his credit, recorded his best finish of the year two weeks ago when he placed eighth at the Ventura Raceway.
Coming off a fifth-place finish at Bakersfield and a sixth at Ventura, Dalton is 10th in the championship standings and that is the highest of the Sexton/Gatlin drivers thus far in 2019. Grant, the 2018 CLS Rookie of the Year, is 14th and Brent is 23rd.
For fans who wish to attend Saturday’s race at the Barona Speedway, gates will open at noon and the first race will take the green flag at 5:00. The track is located at 1754 Wildcat Road in Lakeside (92040). The track website is https://baronaspeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (619) 749-8115.
