I'm part of a group of Aussies coming over to do Ohio Speedweek next month.

We have a few ideas/plans of where to stay and base ourselves but want to make sure we aren't staying in the "wrong" areas. Smile

I have looked at a few places that seem good but a few reviews then have me second guessing. Tough to work out when your 10,053 miles away in Warrnambool!

Tentative plan after we pick up the race car from Indy is to head to the Lima area on the Thursday before Attica, check out there Sunday, head to Zanesville and then possibly base ourselves near Mansfield/Wooster/Ashland area for the rest of the week as that looks to be fairly central (2-2.5hrs) for the rest of the tracks. We feel it will be easier to be in the one spot than a different motel for each night sort of thing.

We will have an F-Truck with an enclosed trailer, a mini van and a motorhome between us and will probably need 2-3 rooms depending on bedding. We have a family from PA that are towing us out that we will put in one room and the driver and crew in the other/s.

If anyone has any suggestions etc on where to stay and base ourselves (or even wants to run a decal on our car for the week) please let me know.

If Mother Nature keeps up her recent form we may need to find somewhere to eat and drink as well - fingers crossed thats not the case!

Cheers,

It sounds like a fairly good plan. Howard Johnson of Lima has advertised giving fans and teams a discount for staying. I would look for a hotel off of I-71 (interstate 71). You should be fairly safe there with some food options. I would try searching the Bellville exit. Should be a quality inn suites, or a comfort inn for under $100. Next exit is the Mansfield exit I believe. Go west for Manfield, East for Wayne County.

There are several nice hotels in the Canton, Ohio area. I would suggest the Fairfield in at the Faircrest exit on Rt. 77, it is only 2 years old and right off the highway. Rt. 30 is 2 iles away runs E&W all the way across the northern half of the state and you will use it often. That puts you about 30 minutes from Wayne County, 1 hour from Muskingum County and Mansfield, 1:20 from Sharon, 1.5 from Attica. Now Eldora, Atomic & Lima are a 2.5-3 hour haul. But, there will not be anyone else to bother you and there will be plenty of places to eat 20 minutes from the hotel. Plus the Pro Football Hall of Fame is 10 minutes away if you wanted to take in something not racing related.

I always moved around when I did that week, the drives to Sharon and Atomic are a bit far compared to some of the other tracks if I remember correctly so I stayed at a few different hotels during the week. Lima is a cool town to stay in as mentioned the HoJo in Lima has a lot of sprint car teams staying there and you have plenty of food options.

Its my 2nd favorite week of the year behind Knoxville so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Hello Simon, you are in for the trip of your life, believe me.

I was wondering how old you were?  The reason being I had a Sprint Car photo Display at the Warrnambool Art Gallery way back in the mid-90's, heck even sold a bunch as well through them.  It was for the week of the Classic and what a 'classic' time I had.   I used to write and shoot photos for Speedway Racing News and Tony Loxley back in the day as well, the 90's.  I also had a bunch of Aussie cars run my Decal (MSPN Photos) as well and would like to get you a few if I can find them.  I retired about a dozen years ago and relocated to Canada, so it won't be easy.  I also Subscribe to Speed/Shift so I will be watching for your car during the very entertaining Speedweek, good luck, cheers Mate.....

Cheers for the replies... I hadn't got back sooner as for some reason this site won't load on any devices at home, only at work.

Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, thats why I'm on Hoseheads during company time!

I will be looking into all of the suggestions later today. The Howard Johnson in Lima does seem the way to go.

Shall update once I know what the plans are.

Hi MSPN,

Got to be a part of it a few years ago and had a ball (except for the rainouts...) so am pumped to head back again. We are doing the first half of PA speedweek as well so there will be no shortage of racing.

Mate, I'm 36 so was mid teens during the mid 90's. I don't recall the display there but it was a few years ago! Fair chance I did see it though!

Classic week then compared to now is certainly much bigger with the higher car counts and the addition of the 3rd night.

The decals would be cool. I can PM you an address in PA if that makes it any easier.

Cheers
