DALTON SEXTON 5TH IN BAKERSFIELD MAIN – FATHER BRENT FAST QUALIFIER!
(Lakeside, CA, April 26, 2019) Sixteen-year-old Dalton Sexton of Lakeside, California had his best finish of 2019 when he placed fifth in the POWRi California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway. In addition to his main event prowess, his father, Brent, garnered the first fast qualifying time of the year for Sexton/Gatlin Racing.
Twenty-seven cars were in the pits for the fourth CLS race of the year. When qualifying ended on the banked 1/3-mile clay oval, all three Sexton/Gatlin Racing drivers ended up in the top-10. Brent was at the top of the list with the fastest time of the 27 cars at 12.876. Grant, 14, was fourth quick at 13.024 and Dalton was ninth when he stopped the clock at 13.120.
For the second race in a row, all three Sexton/Gatlin cars made it straight into the main event out of the heat races. For the record, they all moved forward from their original starting spots. The first heat matched Brent and Grant. They started side by side in the third row with Grant in the fifth-place spot and Brent in the sixth. By the time the checkered ended the eight-lapper, Grant had advanced up to the second -place position for his transfer to the main and Brent did the same by finishing fifth. In the third heat, Dalton started in the fourth-place spot and finished third.
For the 25-lap main, Dalton had the best starting spot for the family trio as he was starting on the outside of the front row. Grant was starting seventh (inside the fourth row) and Brent was forced to start 10th (outside row five) due to the draw for the main event invert.
Dalton stayed around the top five all race long and came across the line fifth. Brent had worked his way from 10th to battle with the top five, but a late race tangle resulted in a 16th place finish. Grant was running a strong race but contact with an infield tire on the 14th lap ended his night in 18th place.
Dalton came out of the race 10th in the 2019 CLS championship standings. Grant, who was Rookie of the Year last year, sits 15th and Brent is 25th.
The CLS is off this weekend, but all three Sexton/Gatlin Racing drivers will be back in action when the series heads to the Ventura Raceway on May 4th.
