Received a letter the mail yesterday stating Spint Car & Midget magazine has new owners and a two year subscription is now $49.95 which is a $14.00 increase.  Believe this a bad start and I and many of my racing friends will not renew, It was bad enough they downsized it a while back to look like a people magazine and now this stupid move.  Good Luck I think you will be sorry

It’s even worse living in Canada. I only live about an hour from the border and although the postage is higher, it’s only a little bit higher and a subscription to SC&M is now around 90$ us funds PER YEAR.

Wow.  24 issues for 50 bucks, less than $2.10 per issue, I think it is a good value.  The price of most publications are going up because of a lot or reasons.  I read a lot of books on the Civil War and the prices are way up on those also.  I will keep my subscription when it comes time to renew because I think the writing is worth it. Oh well everyone has to decide for themselves where to spend their money.

Racing magazines are an after thought in this day and age of instant information.  Between PPV, YouTube highlights, social media, discussion forums like this one, and track and series websites there is an overload of instant information before, during and after most races.  The magazines by their nature are on a time delay so probably their main unique feature today is the in depth stories.  I even find in depth stories on the various websites so even those have found their way online.

It's pretty difficult for a magazine with that time lag of a month or two to compete with all the sources out there these days.  I did some writing for one of the mags some years back myself and had a website at one time so I've got a unique perspective of having seen it from both sides.  I still subscribe to one magazine and I wish them all well but as we all know these are challenging times for print media.

58 cents more, per month, is your breaking point for a magazine mailed to your front door dedicated to Sprints and Midgets.  58 cents per month is enough for you to get online and bitch about it.   If that was my budget, I would order the small fries instead of the large at McDonalds one day per month and actually end up with extra change in my pocket.  You may want to subscribe to ClarkHoward.com daily emails.  He has great advise that will save you hundreds of dollars per year in different ways and maybe $7.00 a year more won't be such a burden.  Get real and order your magazine if you enjoy it is what I would recommend to my friends like you.

I'm out when my subscription is up. The last straw was reading a column previewing the upcoming Williams Grove National open. The only problem was the race was held the weekend before. The current issue I have on my coffee table has the results from Kokomo Smackdown in August.

Well, I thought about not renewing my susciption and then I thought about it more. I don't care about the printed race results because I can find them as they are happening. I do care about the other articles in the magazine though, there are several good writers with interesting articles now, but there is one who has written the same stuff for the last 15 years or so, I skip those articles. Maybe I'm just a hoarder who likes sprint car mags, I have a collection that starts from 1982. I guess I'll just have to evaluate my decision in another 2 years.

I stopped subscribing back around 2013 as it did not have enough content to keep me entertained. Some of the in-depth articles where some research & journalism was done were great such as the challenges with being a promoter. Some of those were few and far between but a majority of the content was already known such as results, interview, and opinions on certain events. Not that I dislike some of the contributor's opinions, but I just don't care. Same reason why I cut cable and stream now as I do not watch ESPN or sports, news channels anymore. In a given day its 30mintues of reporting and 23.5hrs of opinion giving. I don't care what Stephen A Smith or Max Kellerman's opinion is on a given topic or the other 100's of people who never played a sport have to say on something. Want to do an in-depth informative piece on a topic I am all for it.

So you have the whole set of Open Wheel Magazine's too?

I subscribed to Sprint Car & Midget Magazine for a while way back when. After a while it seemed to change into something that no longer gave me the bang for the buck.

I guess the bigger question, givin the changing world of media, what would you want in a racing magazine that would give you the bang for the buck?

No Murphy, I don't have all of the earliest Open Wheel mags. I don't have #1 and unfortunately lost 6 or 7 other issues thoughout the years. I think I have every issue from 85 on though. I also have some neat drag racing programs from the early 70's, that was before I found out race cars could go fast and then turn left.

From an old guy who still appreciates reading ink on paper:

I'm here just about every day and don't go anywhere else for sprint car news - or racing news. So, if it's something other than sprint cars, I know nothing. But when I anxiously awaited and received my National Speed Sport News every week, after reading Chris Economaki's column first, Dave Argibright's second, I read the whole thing - sprints, midgets, nascar, drag, late models, modifieds ......even if I didn't really care much about those after the first two  - but I knew something about them.

It's pretty easy - but not really good - to have a one-track mind these days. And, that one-track mind has been reduced to snippets of information - one or two paragraphs - no in-depth articles.

Jus sayin

Although the size and quality of the paper has changed, I am still a fan of the magazine.I am old school. I continue to subscribe to five racing publications. Area Auto Racing News, Speed Sport, Sprint Car & Midget, Flat Out and Dirt Late Model and love reading every one of them. I follow racing news on internet, but like being able to hold the publications and refer back to them when I feel like it. I also subscibe to Sprint Car Unlimited and read this website at least 4 or 5 times a day. I guess I am an admitted racing junkie and can't get enough racing news, no matter what the medium.

Of course, for up to date race results, its worthless. I like the in depth articles, stories about old timers, etc.

I still subscribe cause I don't want to see print media perish. Get the newspaper every day too, much better news coverage than TV or Internet

I did a handful of articles for Flat Out back before I gave up the reporting and know the editor Justin Zoch and art director Martin DeFries so I still subscribe to that one.  My son used to get Sprint & Midget and would give me his old issues but he has since gotten into other things besides racing and put his money elsewhere.  In depth articles are interesting but I know a lot of drivers after doing the writing and found out more about the politics and drama than I really care to know.

These days I agree with my son's take on getting to involved in the politics.  When I was writing I told him that he should come down in the pits with me and I would introduce him to some of the drivers.  His reply was "no thanks dad, I think of Sprint Car drivers the same way I think of strippers.  I like watching them do their thing but I don't want to get to know them".  There's a lot of wisdom in that.  wink
