I don't think this at all.  The one year I was able to attend was awesome.  I really hope to get back there again some day.  Where else can you get 3 of the top divisions together for a 3 day event?  They sell the place out every year.  Here is a question.  Have you ever attended this event?  That would most likely answer your own question.  There is no way this one is overblown in any way, shape or form.  Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm going to begrudgingly agree with you here (not because I find it distatseful to agree with you, but bc I don't like to necessarily "talk bad" about a sprint car event).  I think a lot of the hype/prestige is manufactured due to it being the last "hoorah" of the season, the fact it's at Charlotte and that it's 3 major dirt divisions...wow maybe I just gave a reason it has prestige.  Nonetheless to me I think it's a bit overhyped and lacks the prestige the optics have you believe, but what the hell do I know. If this race was in mid July or June I don't think it has the prestige.  It gains a lot from being the last / end of season race.  But like all of you I'll be depressed in a few weeks, clamoring to Silly Season and paint schemes...

As a sprint car only race yes, it’s not that big of a deal.

As a dirt track racing event it’s a huge deal. One of my favorite events.

I've been to the World finals every year since 2010. I think it mostly has to do with the fact the weekend falls on my Dads birthday just about every year so its kinda becoming a father/son trip yearly tradition. That being said its easily turning into one of my favorite race weekends of year. As for hype... it always seems down for me because in the back of my mind the season is coming to a close and Don Don usually wraps up the championship during Thursday's qualifying night. As much as I hate to admit it the late models usually produce better racing but as a whole it seems like the event gets bigger and bigger every year. It would be nice if it paid $20k or $30k Saturday.

In order to define a hyped race or one of significant importance, one would have to define what makes a race reach this level.

Which of these things would constitute an important, significant, or "Special Race" or event?

  • Payout
  • Car count
  • Fan Attraction
  • Number of Divisions (Marquee Divisions)
  • Time of Year
  • Historical Significance of the Race

A hyped or significant race all depends on how you use the above listed or any that you would add to describe a particular race.

By the way, this is year is my eleventh year attending the World Finals and I look forward to it each and every year.  Great to get out of town, miss work, and definitely watch the 3 top divisions compete with the best of the best in attendance!!

No question that as an overall EVENT, World Finals MORE that lives up to the "hype".  But even if you look at it from a sprint car only point of view, it's still right up there.  Two full programs of $12,000 to win, $1000 to start races, and what is (in my opinion) the 4th toughest field in winged sprint car racing all year (behind Nationals, the Kings Royal, and MAYBE the Capitani Classic).

I agree. But would add the Tuscarora 50 to that list.

Well , this year anyhow. LOL.

So folks complain that promoters don't promote. Then when they do, the events they promote are over-reated, or over-hyped? So which is it?

Any show with Sprints, Late Models and Modfieds all on the same card without any junk classes is a good night of racing.  There isn't much else going on this time of year so I would go if I could.  Matter of fact Brent Larson WoO Late Model driver is someone I know from when he raced weekly at CLS.  He is sitting in 10th place in WoO LM points.  I'll probably get the Saturday PPV.  wink

Seems like a great event but I kinda miss the Vegas finale on the same weekend as the SEMA show.

Probably the best assessment of the event. Being a racing fan in general I would say it is a great event just having 3 of the best classes in the nation. From a Sprint Car standpoint, I would say out of all the events a year it is might be in the top five or just outside top five from a competition level standpoint. Usually a great car count and top teams.

Hope to go one of these years but typically by the time this year roles around I am out of vacation time.
