No, they are stating it correctly as the 40th Anniversary season.  When you discuss in terms of anniversaries or birthdays it's always 1 year behind the year you're actually completing.  Example:  when you turn 1 year old it's the 1st anniversary of your birth.  You're considered 1 year old (your "1st anniversary year" ) until your next birthday, even though you're living through your 2nd year.

Well........this is the 41st season of the World of Outlaws. There have already been forty seasons and forty champions. So not sure how they count it at forty.

What year was their first year? If it was 1978 this is their 41st year. If it was 1979 this is the 40th season.

Events are 1 the year they take place children are 1 during their 2nd year of life and called 2 after 2 full years of time.

The series started in 1978.  1979 was the first ANNIVERSARY season, not the first season.  Jaken B. is correct: the 41st race season is the 40th ANNIVERSARY season.  (The series would not have reached the 40th anniversary at any time during the 40th racing season.)

It's semantics but I agree with Johnny and Jaken B. here.  When you get married you don't celebrate your 1st Anniversary on your wedding day, you do it AFTER the first year of marriage.

The word anniversary is specific to a single date, according to the definition. Using it to celebrate an entire season is probably incorrect. Celebrating the entire season is celebrating it for what it is, a season. The first date of the Knoxville Nationals for example would be the anniversary date. But the Nationals don't always fall on that date, so the event is celebrated as an annual, not an anniversary. Birthdays, Weddings, etc......fall on specific dates and therefore are Anniversaries. We are celebrating the 41st season of the World of Outlaws. The 40th Anniversary has come and gone. Smile

Not to beat a dead horse but the actual definition of an anniversary is: “the annual recurrence of a date marking a notable event”

This is the 40th recurrence of the date marking the Outlaws first year. 100% correct use of the word.

It depends on the actual terminology. The outlaws 40th anniversary season lingo is correct, as the second year was technically thefirst anniversary. When you look at an event, such as the Knoxville Nationals for example. The first running would be the "Inaugural" and the second running would be the "2nd Annual" so in the case of the 50th Annual Knoxville nationals, it was the 50th running, not the 51st.

I think someone over looked the 40th season and are being creative to acknoledge the milestone. Better late than never. They can not say celebrating 40 years cause that was last year so they are doing right by saying 40th anniversay season.

But who cares? Lets be thankful they are 41 and aging instead of celebrating the 10th year since their last year.

We could also argue if it is really the grratest show on dirt. Everything equine is on dirt and so is beach volleyball.

Its branding and if it gets another sponsor to support them because they are around to stay I am happy.

No one overlooked anything.  They are celebrating 40 completed seasons...how hard is that to figure out!?  That would be like celebrating your 41st year of existence the day after you turned 40.  No one does that so quit trying to think so damn hard.

Relax dude. Re read. I never said they missed it. i said they didnt celebrate the 40th season with any special things so they ARE celebrating the 41st season by calling it the 40th anniversary season. I get it. They didnt do it last year and cant call this the 40th aeason so they celebrate the 40th aniversary season. I ve never seen it done this way and I dont care how they do it. Repeat. It is GOOD to celebrate it. Im glad they can. Im glad they are.

We'll have to wait and see if they celebrate the 50th season of the WoO during the 50th season, or if they celebrate only the anniversary of it after the season is over. Actually, they could celebrate both! (humor)

Oh I guess maybe there's just a translation difference between Canada & US.

"I never said they missed it".  But you said "I think someone over looked the 40th season and are being creative to acknowledge the milestone".

You've never seen it done this way? Seriously? Tracks & series all the time celebrate their anniversary season (WoO is 1978-2018).  People celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and the day after don't say it's the next year, hell an 8 year-old kid isn't going to say he's 9 the next day after his birthday.

Is it too early to ask if Y3K starts 1-1-3000, or 1-1-3001?
