Random thoughts/observations from afar on Night 1 of Nats. Again, from AFAR, I'm not there, but followed last night's action closely. Perhaps someone who was there in person can fill us in on some thoughts as well.
1. Yeah Kyle looked as he has looked all year in a sprint car...really, really impressive.
2. Hodnett's gotta be in a Maxim, right? Looks like one to me (even though XXX is still tweeting that Greg's in a XXX). He's looked stellar the past week or so and he mentioned they basically changed everything on the car.
3. Harli White, in her first 410 race in the states (she ran a 410 is AUS in the winter) makes the A on a prelim night. Pretty impressive. And they had to change the radiator before the A I believe.
4. Wow, did Austin McCarl jump that A Main start. I mean, wow. How in the hell was that not called back (not that it mattered in the end, but geez). That said Austin cointinues to impress in the 2KS at Kville. Been consistent and fast all year there.
5. Yeah the 39 was light at the scales. Wow. I *think* KNIA said the car was 9 lbs light. Derek Cardwell said it real quick from the pits, but they went to him late so I didn't quite make out the car they were talking about (there was another one that was light) but I *think* they were referring to the 39 as being 9lbs light. 9lbs is A LOT.
6. ...#5 aside, Spencer Bayston can absolutely wheel a sprint car. He was 2nd quick I believe before being light at scales. Dude doesn't have but a handful of 410 sprint starts and is absolutely fast every time out. He's 18 and only been racing since 2009-2010ish. It seems like he's on the track to head to pavement (I guess because of the Kunz midget) but man the kid can wheel it.
7. Chase Johnson impressive making the A last night and sitting 14th in points. KTJ also impressive. Zomer quietly sititng 9th in points, should put him near the front of the B on Saturday.
8. Who had Paul McMahan sitting 8th in points...
9. Don Don being Don Don...

You sure (not doubting you, being serious)? Looks like XXX body panels but a Maxim chassis. The XXX logo is still on the right side lower panel (near nerf bar/headers) but it adorned the Mid Top Wing until they went to Kville last week. Just a 27 up there now...interesting no matter what. And also no matter the changes made (whether chassis, shocks, engines, etc.) they are working the last two weeks. The bottom stays around Saturday and Greg could be looking at a Top 5 or podium.

Thought the start was interesting also. Almost the same brake check in this race as the brake check that caused all the turmoil in the 360 race with Hill and Swindell. Dangerous act for sure but this one worked out.
Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Not sure the rules on the start but McCarl went at the 1st cone and Larson at the second. I think the car on the pole(Larson) is supposed to start the race somewhere inbetween. Hey if you can get away with it, a "good" start is part of racing. I saw his dad jump the start 3 times in 1 night at WG(got called on 2 of them).

Is it the same car he ran the 360 Nationals in? I know he's been struggling on the 410 side. I was wondering/thinking they were gonna change it over but never heard if they did or didn't.

Same car, just faster with the 410.
