DICKEY WINS SECOND CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT MAIN OF 2017 AT SANTA MARIA!

(Torrance, CA, June 29, 2017) Chris “Crash” Dickey, who will soon be moving back to his native Indiana, became only the third California Lightning Sprint Car repeat main event winner of 2017 when he bested the field at the Santa Maria Raceway last Saturday night.  Dickey came all the way from the 14th starting spot for the win and It was the third lifetime in the CLS.

The slender driver, who resides in Murrieta, had his day get off to an auspicious start when he had a flat tire on the trailer on his way to the races.  Things were not much more impressive when he got to the track as he only qualified 10th in the 21-car field and was fifth out of seven cars in his eight-lap heat race.  That placed him in the unenviable 14th starting slot for the 25-lap main.

Young rookie Dominic Del Monte of Gardena started on the pole for the main event with series point leader Jarrett Kramer of Spring Valley on the outside.  Four-time series champ Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita and impressive sophomore Eric Lange of Lakewood, made up the second row with Palmdale’s Eric Greco and Madera’s Charlie Caraccilo, who won at Bakersfield the previous week, in the third row.

Kramer got the jump on Del Monte on the start and they were followed by Lange and Caraccilo.  High school student Lange took second just before the end of the opening go around and quickly set his sights on the leader.  By the end of the second circuit, Caraccilo was third and Michnowicz was fourth.   Soon after, Ventura rookie Robb Pelmear brought out the first yellow when he stopped in turn two.  At that time, Dickey had passed three cars and was up to 11th.

Coming off his win the previous week at Bakersfield, veteran Caraccilo moved into the second spot when went under Lange at the end of the fifth lap.  Caraccilo immediately turned up the heat on leader Kramer and at the same time was having to hold off the determined Lange and Michnowicz.

The top four had moved away from the rest of the pack and were just about into lapped traffic at the end of lap eight before Anaheim’s Dale Gamer brought out the second yellow flag when he stopped in turn four.  By that time, Dickey, in the 03 Motorsports/Baselite/Wire-Tex/Henchcraft/2004 Yamaha 1000, was up to sixth.  He had been running the top and had it all to himself as he made his way towards the front.

On the restart with 17-laps to go, Michnowicz, who has been racing well over 40-years, took everyone to school.  Going around the outside, he went front from fourth to the lead in less than a lap.  Less than a lap later, Caraccilo took Kramer for second and Dickey also got by the 2010 champ for third.  By the 12th lap, Michnowicz had opened up a commanding lead over Caracillo who had his hands full trying to fend off the persistent challenges of Dickey.

Michnowicz, who was hunting down his series-leading fourth main event win of the year, saw his lead disappear when Greco and Ken Coulston of Bermuda Dunes produced the third yellow of the race on lap 15.  It also proved to be the last hurrah for Michnowicz.  Coming down for the restart with 11-laps to go, his car pitched sideways in front of the pack and Caraccilo, who had nowhere to go or time to get away, plowed into the side of the spinning leader.  A broken bird cage was the culprit and it ended the night for both Michnowicz and Caraccilo.

That handed the lead to Dickey when the race was restarted with still 11-laps to go.  Kramer was second, with Lange third, Dyer fourth and pole-sitter Del Monte fifth.  While Dickey got a great restart, the same could not be said for Kramer.  Lange roared around him for second with Dyer trying the pry the third spot away from him on the low line.  Dyer, who took his first solo ride as a CHP officer a few days after the race, took the third spot from Kramer on lap sixteen.  By that time, Dickey had pulled away for a comfortable lead and Lange was locked comfortably into second.

Despite heavy lapped traffic, Dickey raced the remainder of the way unchallenged and had a half straight lead at the checkered.  Lange, Dyer, Kramer and Del Monte rounded out the top five.

“This is the first time I have ever driven a racecar at Santa Maria Speedway,” said Dickey, who was also the race “Hard Charger.”  “It was pretty neat.  We started 14th and it was to our advantage as we got by a lot of them while they were messing around on the bottom.  Hope we put on a good show riding the rim.”

Earlier in the night Ventura’s Bruce Douglass out qualified the 21-car field with a lap of 14.154.  Caraccilo was second at 14.174 and Greco was third at 14.268.  In heat race action, Del Monte picked up his first ever CLS heat win.  Caraccilo and Dyer claimed the other two.

Heading into the series next race at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway on July 8th, Kramer has a 60-point lead over Lange in the championship standings.  Camarillo’s Cody Nigh is third in the standings, 90-points out of the top spot.  Michnowicz and Greco round out the top five.
