I've been a fan of sprints on dirt (prefer non-wing) since back in the 60"s. I've quit attending most wing races and I now see more USAC sprints on pavement. The main reason for this is the frequent, unnecessary delays that seem to have increased in sprint car racing. Most of these delays could be eliminated by doing two things. One, since most yellows are intentional by drivers who have made a mistake and who choose to stop the race for better restarting position, there should be a rule that anyone causing a yellow (for any reason) starts at the back AND a lap down - this would eliminate about 75% of the yellows. Second, it's unfortunate when any driver has a mechanical problem, but that's part of racing and allowing three (or any number of) laps for that driver to make repairs is annoying bullshit! If your car breaks, you lose - that's the way it goes. There is nothing more exciting than seeing 3 or 4 lead cars driving through lapped traffic when there are long - now rare - stretches of green flag racing. Many times now the first half of main events are run one and two laps at a time with intentional yellows and then waiting for people to fix their cars. Track officials: run the races for the fans' entertainment, not just to please drivers/owners.
