Mechanicsburg, PA—July 19, 2007--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director
Donny Schatz battled Danny Lasoski for the win in the World of Outlaws last visit to Williams Grove Speedway in May. The last five laps of the opening night of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts on Thursday was a mirror image of that event, with Lasoski closing on Schatz as the laps wound down.
Schatz sailed under the checkered flag first for the third straight time at Williams Grove Speedway and for the third straight time in World of Outlaws competition dating back to last Saturday in the Kings Royal.
"It was a good night," said Schatz, driver of the ParkerStore J&J. "The car was good. We are glad to get this one in the books and return to victory lane."
The 25-lap event went non-stop, with pole sitter Jason Sides leading the first 17 circuits before Schatz took the point. Early in the race, Sides opened about a 10-car length advantage over Jeff Shepard, as he sought his first win of the season.
On the 15
th lap, Sides entered traffic with Schatz just behind him. Schatz looked low off the second turn for the lead, but could not quite make the pass. On the next lap, Schatz passed Sides on the low side of the first to take the lead, but Sides battled right back in the second turn to regain the point and officially be scored the leader at the line.
Schatz made the pass for the lead and ultimately the win on the 18
th lap as he dove under Sides exiting the second turn and quickly began to pull away in traffic. Schatz worked a couple of distinct lines on the track as he negotiated his way through traffic late in the race, while fending off a hard charging Danny Lasoski.
"We had a little wing problem and could not get it back enough," noted the winner. "We should have been a little better, but we found the race track first and we got there first and that is what counts. We know what we have to do for tomorrow night and we'll come back and try again."
Lasoski started the A-Feature in the fourth position, after losing an engine on the last lap of the Crane Cams Dash. His crew quickly changed the engine in time to make sure the former series champion was ready when the A-Feature hit the track. Lasoski ran in the Top-Five all race long and took the third spot from Jeff Shepard on the 17
th lap before setting his sights on Sides, who he would pass to earn the runner-up finish.
"I didn't get to really look at the race track, after we blew an engine on the last lap of the dash," said Lasoski, driver of the Roth Motorsports JEI. "We just made a guess at it and we weren't even close. I kept working with the race car and getting the wing back, to get it balanced. By the time I got the thing all adjusted, Donny (Schatz) had passed us. We ran with him there for the last few laps, but he is on a roll right now."
Jason Sides led the first 17 laps of the race before giving way to Schatz. The native of Bartlett, Tennessee had a left rear tire going down as the laps wound down and drove the last couple of laps with very little air in the tire to finish third.
"It was a good run," said Sides, driver of the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. "Anytime we can qualify well and make the feature at this place, it's a good night for us. The last couple of weeks we have not had much luck. To come here and qualify well and win a heat and win the dash is a good night. We drew a one in the dash and got a good start."
Jeff Shepard finished fourth in the Zemko Tool & Die Maxim. He ran second early in the event to Sides and closed to within a couple of car lengths a number of times.
Joey Saldana was fifth in the Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI, after starting the A-Feature in the ninth spot, as he remains second in the World of Outlaws championship standings.
The event was the second straight race that has gone non-stop green-to-checkers for the World of Outlaws. Schatz was not sure on the ultra-fast half-mile if he would have a chance to move up from fifth to battle for the lead without a caution. With how fast his car was, he put on a quite a display of driving in both traffic and clean race track.
"That's when the racing is the most fun and guys can come through there," explained Schatz. "Guys were passing and going all over, and it's great to do that. You can put some harder tires on and the longer you go, the better you get."
Schatz began the night by setting fast time with a solid field of 50-plus cars signed in, which along with his win in the feature and second place finish in his heat race. He parlayed that into a second-place finish in the first heat to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash, where he finished fifth. For the first five laps of the A-Feature he bided his time waiting for his car and the track to come to him.
"I needed to get a little heat in my tires," he said. "I watched what they were doing a little bit. I had nothing to lose by moving around and I started to gain ground by moving around. Tomorrow night I am sure will be way different and what we did tonight will not work tomorrow night. We just have to come in with our basic deal and start over from scratch and do a little testing."
Schatz points to a full team effort and continual preparation for his success at Williams Grove Speedway. In his career, he has visited the winner's circle the famed half-mile 12 times.
"It doesn't matter where you go, you just have to keep on pushing and pushing," said the reigning World of Outlaws champion. "I seem to like the car control and the car feel here no matter what we do. We're glad to have that feel and to have that success here, winning three in-a-row. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and add to it. "
While Lasoski was disappointed he was not in the winner' circle, he knew his team gave it everything they had, after quickly changing an engine after the Crane Cams Dash to be ready in for the A-Feature, which was less than 15 minutes after the completion of the dash. Veteran World of Outlaws crew member Rob Hart recently joined the team and has been working closely with Dave Whitworth to make the team one of the strongest in the pit area.
"The guys worked their tails off to get that engine changed before the feature," said Lasoski. "I am very proud of them and this entire team. Rob (Hart) is an asset to this team. Three heads working together is a lot better than one. We'll just keep working hard and plugging away at it."
Sides entered lapped traffic around the 14
th lap and pondered after the race what may have been if a caution flag had flown providing clear race track ahead of the leaders.
"It was a surprise not having any cautions," admitted Sides. "I really thought there would be some, especially as slick as the bottom got. I thought some guys might run there and hit the bottom and spin. It was a great race for the spectators."
Brian Montieth was sixth in the Premiere Auto Works Maxim, with Daryn Pittman seventh in the Titan Garages Maxim, Tim Shaffer was eighth in the Casey's General Store Maxim, Paul McMahan was ninth in the Bass Pro Shops Eagle and Greg Hodnett was 10
th in the J&J Fabrication J&J.
