By Tony Paris OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 18) — The Southern Iowa Fair was held Wednesday with KBOE 104.9FM, Hy-Vee and the Southern Iowa Fair Board sponsoring Fan Appreciation Night with prizes and a candy dash for kids and adults winning prizes from Hy-Vee and KBOE 104.9FM. The fans paid $5 for five exciting classes with the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series plus the second appearance of the season by the Mid-America 305 Winged Sprints with 15 winged warriors checked in to thrill the large fair crowd. In the first feature of the night, Mark Steinke of Gibson led the field to the green flag for the 15-lap USRA Stock Car main event, and led all 15 laps for the win in just his second appearance of 2007. Steinke held of several challenges from Colt Mather, who settled for the runner-up spot. Nathan Wood and Josh Newell battled for the third spot with Wood taking third and Newell in fourth. The second appearance of the Mid-America 305 Winged Sprints saw Mark Widmar of Ottumwa draw the pole and lead all 16 laps for his first win of the 2007 season, holding off 14-year-old superstar Tasker Phillips of Pleasantville, who took his second straight runner-up finish. The younger Phillips brother held off Rager Phillips, who was driving the Bruce Clark-owned No. 66 machine and took the third spot with Mike Mayberry and Louis Lynch battling for fourth on the last two laps with Mayberry taking fourth and Lynch in fifth. Mayberry took over the points lead from Matt Stephenson, who had mechanical trouble in his heat race, ending his night. The third feature of the night was the 10-lap USRA B-Mod main event with Cory Brown of Ottumwa leading the first six laps before Brett Moffitt of Grimes took the lead and won his fifth straight feature of the 2007 season. Brown took the third spot with Paul Underwood in third and Andrew Schroeder in fourth. The USRA Hobby Stock feature went 16 laps with Danny Thrasher of Agency holding off several challenges to take his second win at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Thrasher held off long-time friend Jason McDaniel, who took the third spot. Randy Veldhuizen of Eddyville passed McDaniel on the last lap for the runner-up spot and Bill Gibson of Knoxville got fourth. Three-wide racing behind Thrasher thrilled the crowd for the final six laps of the event. In the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified feature race, Scott Dickey drove his 2007 Larry Shaw Chassis to victory lane for the second time this season, holding of Brad Pinkerton who returned back to action after several weeks away. Richie Gustin Jr. of Gilman finished third, followed by Ron Ver Beek of Oskaloosa, who went to the work area and still worked his way from the back to finish fourth. Next week at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster will be Fan Appreciation Night presented by Friday After 5 and Southern Iowa Fair Board with the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series and five classes on tap.
