McCarl Wins Thriller at K-C Raceway

Alma, OH—July 28, 2007--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director

Terry McCarl recently took on the nickname, "TV Terry" after the success he has had during the "SuperClean Summer of Money" on ESPN2, as well as the quick wit and stage presence that he possesses when the tapes are rolling. He won the opening race of the eight-race mini-series last month at Knoxville Raceway, and on Saturday night at K-C Raceway, held off a furious charge from Donny Schatz to earn his second win of the "SuperClean Summer of Money" and second overall win on the season.

On a track that traditionally produces two and three-wide racing, McCarl and Schatz kept the fans on their feet for the last 10 laps of the event. McCarl took the lead on the 33rd lap and withstood two late cautions to earn the $10,000 triumph. Schatz looked high and then low lap-after-lap trying to get a run on the leader. He inched ahead several times but each and every time at the line, McCarl was officially scored the leader from the 33rd until the final lap.

The event can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, July 29 at Noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central.

"The television cameras must keep me motivated," smiled McCarl, driver of the Big Game Treestands Eagle, in Victory Lane after doing donuts on the back straightaway. "It is great to win in front of them. I had a great car all night. We timed in well and then were fast in the heat and won that. That put us in a good position."

McCarl quickly worked his way into the Top-Five after the drop of the green flag, first passing Jac Haudenschild and then Steve Kinser, before setting his sights on Schatz. After one long green flag run that last for 14 laps, a series of cautions plagued the event. A couple of those cautions were for Kinser and Haudenschild, who both sustained flat tires while running in the Top-Five at different points of the race.

"I am really a rhythm guy and I was going pretty good at the beginning," explained the winner. "The yellow came out and that makes it a whole new ball game, especially with these tires, because you don't know what you are going to have. I figured some things out at the Kings Royal for this type of deal, since it's the same type of dirt over there. On the restarts I think I am better than I used to be and really got going."

The race began with pole sitter Jeremy Campbell taking the lead, though the yellow flag flew before all the cars had completed a full lap, thus leading to a complete restart. On the second start, again Campbell again jumped to the lead in the first turn.

He would lead the first seven laps, before Donny Schatz would take the point on the low side of the track exiting the third turn. At the same time, Chad Kemenah was waging an epic battle with Steve Kinser. Lap-after-lap the pair ran side-by-side and traded the position, with Kemenah ultimately taking the runner-up spot.

A lap 14 caution helped the rest of the field, as Schatz had been setting a torrid pace prior to that. The reigning World of Outlaws champion was also in front when a red flag occurred to allow the teams to fill the cars with fuel. On the restart, McCarl was right on Schatz's bumper and a couple laps later McCarl used the high side of the track to carry momentum down the front staightaway to take the lead.

Schatz battled back and tired both the high and low sides of the track in an attempt to pass McCarl as the laps wound down. Several times, Schatz inched ahead of McCarl, but at the line for the final eight laps of the event, McCarl was officially scored the leader. While he was disappointed he finished second, Schatz was pleased knowing the fans saw a tremendous race with passing all over the track and throughout the field.

"It was a good race and just came out on the short end of the stick," said Schatz, driver of the ParkerStore J&J. "We gave him everything that we could and he protected the bottom the last couple of laps. We did all we could and there will be another race and we will forget about tonight, just like we forgot about last night."

Chad Kemenah started seventh and quickly worked his way into the Top-Three and earned a third place finish. He battled Steve Kinser for a number of laps for the runner-up spot and then for the third spot. It was his first Top-Five finish driving for Hard Eight Racing. He was ninth two weeks ago at the Kings Royal to earn his first Top-10 with the team.

"I can't thank Ray Brooks and Jon Kantor enough for giving me an opportunity to drive this car," said Kemenah, driver of the Kantor Oil Company XXX. "I am tickled to death to run third. We need to get on a good role and start making a habit of this hopefully."

Rob Chaney started 20th and finished fourth in the Berlin Bakery JEI. Daryn Pittman also passed several cars, as he finished fifth after starting 22nd in the Titan Garages Maxim to earn the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award.

Danny Lasoski powered his way through the field after starting 18th to finish sixth in the Roth Motorsports JEI. Kerry Madsen was seventh in the Selma Shell Maxim, with Tim Shaffer in the Casey's General Store in eighth. Joey Saldana was ninth in the Open Joist JEI, with pole sitter Jeremy Campbell in the RLM Financial Maxim rounding out the Top-10 after leading the opening seven laps of the race.

For McCarl the win was his first since welcoming veteran World of Outlaws mechanic and crew chief Tyler Swank to the team. McCarl thanked his entire crew by bringing them out in front of the televisions cameras after they celebrated the win.

"He has brought some good consistency to the team," noted McCarl, of the addition of Swank to the team. "Greg (McCormick) had been doing a lot of the stuff himself this year and we had been shuffling around guys, I think we have a very strong team right now."

Schatz used several lines during the race, as he earned his third straight finish of second or better at the track. On the final two laps of the race he was right against the wall for a time and also ran on the bottom of the track as he searched for a way around McCarl.

"It was all over the place," said Schatz. "It got real slick and it was like Eldora (Speedway) was and Ohsweken (Speedway) was. These guys have been working hard on these race tracks. The World of Outlaws is doing a great job policing everything that is going on and making sure that we get great race tracks."

Kemenah had his car hooked up on the bottom of the track as he charged into the Top-Three prior to the halfway point of the 40-lap contest. In traffic he switched his line a little bit to clear the slower cars.

"I didn't want to see that caution when I got into second, because I think I may have had something for everybody," shared Kemenah. "I think we might have sealed off a tire. It was tough to get into a rhythm late. When you get that many cautions near the end, you just want to see the thing end. I thought the tires would seal up more than they did. We got lucky to hold onto third."

The event can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, July 29 at Noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central.

The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, August 3 at Charter Raceway Park in Wisconsin for a two-night show that will put the cap on the "SuperClean Summer of Money."
