Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Eldora Speedway Rossburg, OH- April 9, 2008--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series visit the famed Eldora Speedway this week for two full nights of racing this week on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. The half-mile has been a staple on the schedule since the series inaugural season in 1978.
There have been a total of 29 drivers victorious in A-Feature event with the World of Outlaws at Eldora Speedway dating back to 1978. There are 10 current drivers that have been victorious at the track which is owned by two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.
Craig Dollansky and Jason Meyers lead the series into Eldora as they are separated by just a single marker atop the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series standings. Meyers was victorious at Eldora last season, as was Steve Kinser, Paul McMahan, Joey Saldana and Donny Schatz.
Dollansky won twice at the track in 2006 and has five overall wins at Eldora in his career. Other current World of Outlaws drivers that have visited the winner's circle at the high-banked track include: Jac Haudenschild, Danny Lasoski, Daryn Pittman, Tim Shaffer and Jason Sides.
Each event will be a full racing program, featuring time trials, heats races, the Crane Cams Dash, as well as a C-Main if needed, a B-Main and an A-Feature, with full championship points on the line as well, with $10,000 going to the winner on each night.
2007 Race Recaps: The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series competed five times in 2007 at Eldora Speedway.
April 13: Jason Meyers put his name in the record books, as he became the first winner after the resurfacing and reconfiguration of the track.
The California native slid by Jac Haudenschild on the 28th lap in traffic to take the lead and ultimately the win. He then held off a furious charge by Donny Schatz and Jason Sides, on the final lap to take the $10,000 winner's share of the purse.
Meyers started in the fifth spot and by the second lap of the 30-lap contest, was up to third. On the sixth circuit, he powered his way into the runner-up spot, setting his sights on Haudenschild, who had taken the lead from Daryn Pittman on the fifth lap. For most of the race, Meyers kept his car glued to the bottom of the track, as did a majority of competitors.
The only hiccup that Meyers had on the night came after the checkered flag flew. Terry McCarl who was running in front of him shredded a tire, causing Meyers to make contact with him and come to a stop. After receiving a push from Work' N Woody, the Official Push Truck and Safety Vehicle of the World of Outlaws, Meyers was able to take a victory lap and even did a half-donut for the crowd before climbing out the car in a shower of confetti while being sprayed with champagne by his crew.
Schatz was second, with Jason Sides third, Jac Haudenschild fourth and Daryn Pittman fifth.
June 2:
Paul McMahan picked up the first win of his career at Eldora in a thrilling battle with Jason Solwold and Dean Jacobs.
After lining up second for the 30-lap event, he quickly moved into the third spot, passing Danny Lasoski on the fourth lap. He slipped back to fourth on the 13th lap, and after getting around Joey Saldana on lap 17, he was in position for an epic duel with Jason Solwold and Dean Jacobs.
McMahan took the lead for the first time on the night on the 22nd lap, as he went to the low side of turn four. The next lap, Solwold went up the track and took the lead back again in turns three and four. They battled wheel-to-wheel the next couple of laps, with Solwold leading at the line each time, before the caution flag flew leading to a single file restart.
Solwold led on the final restart, with Jacobs briefly slipping past McMahan for the runner-up spot, only to have McMahan power back around him. On the 25th circuit, McMahan charged around Solwold on the high side of the track to make the pass for the lead and ultimately the win.
Dean Jacobs was third, with Daryn Pittman fourth and Jason Meyers fifth.
July 13- Knight Before the Kings Royal:
Steve Kinser continued to add to his legacy at Eldora Speedway, adding another win in a very dominating performance.
He led all 30 laps of the Knight Before the Kings Royal to take the checkered flag and the $10,000 top prize at the track owned by fellow Indiana native Tony Stewart.
Kinser took the lead on the opening lap powering past pole sitter Kenny Jacobs in the first turn and never looked back. On the first lap, Terry McCarl jumped into the second spot after starting fifth and looked to the high side of the track in turn two and again in turn four for the lead, with Donny Schatz just behind him.
McCarl dove under Kinser on the fifth lap for the lead exiting the second turn, but the caution flag flew, negating the pass. On the ensuing restart, McCarl looked high coming off the second turn for the lead, but Kinser charged down the back straightaway and continued to hold the point. McCarl would finish in the runner-up position. Donny Schatz was third, with Jason Solwold fourth and Jason Meyers fifth.
July 14- Kings Royal:
Donny Schatz added another trophy to his collection, earning his first career Kings Royal triumph, which paid $50,000.
The 40-lap event began with Craig Dollansky charging from the third starting spot to take the lead on the high side of the track. Schatz, who started on the pole, battled back exiting the second turn as he looked low for the lead.
Dollansky continued to run the high side of the track in the opening laps, with Schatz on the bottom. Schatz began to close on Dollansky on the fourth lap. Two laps later, the reigning World of Outlaws champion dove under Dollansky exiting the fourth turn to take the lead.
On the seventh lap, Schatz entered lapped traffic and would weave his way through the slower machines until the yellow flag flew on the 22nd lap. Under the Kings Royal format, the lapped cars<http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=261348&FS=WOO> maintained their position on the track, thus putting six cars between Schatz and Dollansky on the ensuing restart.
Schatz quickly pulled away with open track ahead of him and was again in traffic on the 29th lap. When the final checkered flag<http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=261348&FS=WOO> flew, Schatz had won by over seven seconds, in what was one of the most dominating performances in Kings Royal history, leading the final 35 laps of the event. Jason Meyers ended up second, with Terry McCarl third, Jason Solwold fourth, and Joey Saldana fifth.
September 21:
Joey Saldana picked up the third A-Feature win of his World of Outlaws career at Eldora in the 30-lap contest.
Saldana was running third when leader Donny Schatz had a right rear tire explode on the 10th lap. On the ensuing restart, Saldana battled Steve Kinser and took the lead on the 12th lap exiting the fourth turn and would go on to lead the remainder of the race.
Saldana lined up third for the 30-lap contest and dove low exiting the second turn on the opening lap to take the runner-up spot from Paul McMahan. He then fell back to third as Steve Kinser got around him for the second position. Saldana then chased Kinser for seven laps before taking the lead and ultimately the win. Paul McMahan was third, with Daryn Pittman fourth and Terry McCarl fifth.
