Havasu 95 Speedway - Chris Gerchamn takes his Dads Birthday Cake away!!
Press Release Submitted by cruisin95 on 03/26/2008 at 9:29 AM Send To Friend | Report Press Release

It may have been a full moon Saturday night but nobody noticied, as all eyes were on the racetrack. Only one yellow flag came out in the four main races at Havasu 95 Speedway Saturday and only in the final laps of the Factory Stock Main Event.

Always one of the most exciting races of the program, the 12-lap Factory Stocks didn’t fail to disappoint, with drivers going three wide into turns one and two on the first lap. By lap two, it became a battle between Mike Harris and Rick Clark, the two staying two wide until lap six, when Clark’s vehicle started to smoke heavily from just under the engine.

Harris held on to the lead until lap 10 when two cars went sideways and the only yellow of the night came out. The following green saw Clark sneak in for the lead but again the smoke started and Clark’s car just couldn’t hold on. Harris and Lisa Snell raced by to take one and two at the checkered flag. “I tried to run a better line,” Harris said. “He (Clark) was a little out of control in the corners and I knew I had the speed to get by him. I said I might as well take it.”

In the 30-lap Ford Focus Midget feature race, Ian Miille was battling for third until lap three when he saw an opening on the lower line in turn one. Miille took the opening and never looked back, opening up a half-track lead en route to an easy. “I saw an opening, he made a mistake and I dove for it. After that I just held on,” Miille said. “Last time I was here I had some trouble, so this is a come back for me. My dad gave me a great car to work with.”

The Gerchman family battled it out in the 35-lap Modified race. Chris and Larry Gerchman went two-wide through the first six laps, each trying to find an edge over the other until Chris finally nosed in front. Chris Gerchman held through challenges by Billy Johannek and a field of lapped cars that refused to move, including a tire bump with the last-place vehicle that would not give ground. In the end Chris Gerchman grabbed the checkered with Johannek second and Larry Gerchman third. “Even though it was his (Larry’s) birthday, I just couldn’t let him have it,” Chris Gerchman said.

In Street Stock racing, Mike Sutterfield had the pole at race start and never relinquished his spot. “You can’t ask for better than that, green the whole way,” he said. The only battle in the race was for second, with Ralph Adams overtaking Chip Campbell to get the second spot.
