Press Release Submitted by BigDog on 09/25/2007 at 6:35 AM Send To Friend | Report Press Release

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 24, 2007) – With Skip Wilson and Brandon Berryman knotted atop the point charts, the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region faces a critical two night stand in southeast Texas this weekend.

On Friday night, the series takes to Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX.  Then on Saturday night, it's on to Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX.  The events mark the final visits of the season to both speedways, with both features offering $2,000 to win.

With eleven nights of action already in the books and only the season-ending event at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, MS, remaining after this weekend's double, Wilson and Berryman are tied for the series points lead.

Wilson, the 47-year-old veteran shoe out of Mesquite, TX, has finished among the top ten in nine of eleven feature events this year while 27-year-old Berryman of Missouri City, TX, notched his third series win of the year this past weekend.

Although Wilson and Berryman lead the way into the weekend, at least a pair of other drivers still are within legitimate striking distance of the title.

Defending series champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, enters this weekend's action just a dozen markers out of the lead, with Gulf South veteran racer Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, just 32 points out of the lead in fourth.

Greg Rilat, the three-time Gulf South Region points runner-up from Texas City, TX, enters the weekend ranked fifth.  Rilat is 66 points out of the lead.

Eight points behind Rilat is Tommy Bryant of Montgomery, TX, with the balance of the top ten including 2005 series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Conroe, TX, Jimmy Brooks of College Station, TX, 16-year-old Kathryne Minter of Bedford, TX, and Johnny Miller of Burleson, TX.

Jason Johnson, Berryman and Michael Dupuy have each posted ASCS Gulf South wins at Motorama Speedway this season with another pair of events getting rained out.

Johnny Miller and Travis Rilat have split ASCS Gulf South wins at Houston Raceway Park, with two other events rained out.

Both nights of racing action are set to go green at 7:00 p.m.

Motorama Speedway is located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90.  For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200.

Houston Raceway Park is located east of Houston on I-10 to Exit 798, then three miles south on State Road 146, then 0.8 miles southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565.  For more information, contact the track at 281-383-7223.

After ten rainouts this year, the 2007 slate for the ASCS Gulf South Region now consists of 14 events at eight different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series.  With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
