Frankie Beard’s “Sweet Tooth” Clinches First FASTRAK Victory at Gordon Park Speedway
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** April 6th, 2013 FASTRAK PR – Wesley Outland
(Augusta,
Georgia) – The next stop on the 2013 FASTRAK Decade of Speed Tour came
right back to the State where the last race took place - Georgia. “Late
Model Mania” was an absolute success for the Lavonia Speedway and
Entertainment Complex. Now the drivers of the FASTRAK Racing Series City
Chevrolet Touring Division set their sights on the 3/8th mile Gordon
Park Speedway nestled a short drive off I-20. The $2,000 to win event
was race #5 of the season’s 2013 FASTRAK 10th Anniversary and the 2nd
Points Race for the City Chevrolet Touring Division race in the
Southeast/Mideast Region.
The decision was discussed during the
drivers meeting to give the FASTRAK teams 2 rounds of hot laps to shake
their cars down. During “VP Race for the Pole Qualifying” the young up
and coming star in the #07 from Manning, SC Gib Gibbons set fast time
and received his first ever FASTRAK Pole for a Touring event. The
drivers turned around the 3/8th mile in 14.105 seconds.
With
quick turnaround time and hard work by all the FASTRAK officials,
drivers and teams the 40 lap A-Main Feature was hitting the track at
9PM. The exceptional crowd on hand was ready to see the FASTRAK Racing
Series battle on the 3/8th mile clay oval for the 1st time in history.
The Fans of the Gordon Park Speedway we’re then introduced to the
drivers of the “FASTRAK Universe” with the famous 4 wide salute and
Fireworks extravaganza.
After a multiple redo on the Official
start the field got stacked and decked almost three wide exiting off the
third corner. In that chain reaction it caused the #4x from Athens,
Georgia Danny Sanders get cross checked and shot out of a cannon into
the infield for the yellows to fly in Caution #1. With another shot at
the restart the race was halted by the yellow flag again when #4x Danny
Sanders and #4h Taylor Hicks went three wide with #8 of Ron Parker
pinned in the middle. “The Bull” Parker was able to scamper away however
the two FASTRAK Late Models #4’s would spin in unison putting out the
caution again. The “BIG ONE” so to speak took place on lap #13 when #77
Brian Conner “The Dominator” from Martinez, Georgia jumped the cushion
in turn three sending the car shooting up the track with the entire left
side getting airborne. Conner’s car surfaced again with ill handling
issues throughout the duration of the night. That caused another 4 car
incident with drivers getting minor to heavy damage including, #11 David
Smith, #41 Joe Cox, #57 Lee Cooper and #47 Michael Page.
All
the while #07 Gib Gibbons was the man out in front until on the restart
until lap 17 when #2b from Toccoa, Georgia took advantage of the choose
rule on a restart and at the green was able to get the “hole-shot” on
the bottom of topside’s #07 Gibbons entering turn one. He set sail and
after getting loose battling for the exit off turn four would take the
lead and brought the Gordon Park crowd to their feet in a roaring
crescendo. The caution would fall one last time when another up and
coming star to watch in the “Peach State” from Statesboro, Georgia #T1
Joshua Bishop. Bishop was actually putting on an impressive run but with
13 laps to go looping he car around solo on the back straightaway to
put the yellow out for the final time. On the final restart Gibbons and
Parker rallied all they could to try and get around “The Ice Cream Man”
#2b of Frankie Beard in the Dairy Queen Barry Wright.
It just
wasn’t enough as he exited off turn four to cross the stripe and win the
Inaugural $2,000 payday in the FASTRAK Spring Nationals at Gordon Park
Speedway. It was also his first ever FASTRAK Touring series victory as
he’s won some weekly crate shows at Modoc, South Carolina before but
never on the Touring level till Saturday. It was truly a great moment
down at victory lane with tears, laughter, kisses and hugs of
achievement. It was good to see an “under dog” driver on the tour that’s
struggled in season’s past finally broken through and get the first
victory on the FASTRAK Racing Series circuit.
