Antioch Speedway: Wingless Sprints Sat. June 11 - '08 Champ Bill Macedo On the Move
Press Release Submitted by on 06/10/2011 at 10:49 AM Send To Friend | Report Press Release
Antioch, Calif. - Former All Star Wingless Sprint Car champ Bill Macedo likes to excite his family and friends. He sees that as his mission on Saturday night, even though he is just a few points away from gaining the top spot in this season’s point tally at Antioch Speedway. “Excite your fans and family, and have fun doing it,” Macedo explained. “That is what sprint car racing is all about.” Macedo was the 2008 series champ. The Concord, Calif. construction equipment repairman worked his way up by racing go-karts for ten years before jumping into a sprint car. “Sprint cars are a challenge in general,” he explained. “And, wingless sprint cars are more of a challenge. Without the wing, you have to search for traction. Getting your car to work for you is the goal.” Dan Gonderman of Antioch is leading the point tally at the speedway. Nevertheless, Macedo isn’t focused on him. “He (Gonderman) has more laps around that track than anyone in the wingless sprint division,” he explained. “But, the moment you focus on one driver, someone else will come along and beat you. I already have a championship behind me. Now, I take one race at a time.” Macedo feels running the best he can week after week will reap rewards. “We’re taking the bugs out of the new engine,” he explained. “It is a good night when you run well and are able to load the car on the trailer and go home ready for the next race.” Macedo has experienced a few flips in his sprint car career, and had to miss the last half of last season when his engine blew. “When you race year after year and then you can’t race, it is tough,” he explained. “I made the best of the break, built a new engine, and came back this season.” His sleek white No. M1 sprinter will take to the track Saturday night when the sprinters headline a complete program of Limited Late Model Stock Cars, Hobby Stock Cars, “Mini Trux” and “Four Bangers.” Larry Damitz has been on a tear in the late model division, winning four in a row at Antioch and Merced Speedways. The 82-year-old Vallejo veteran driver is challenged week after week in an endless dogfight with Fred Ryland of Brentwood. The two are tied for first in the point battle. Young Danny Wagner of Bay Point, who is just finishing up high school, is the man to beat in the “Mini Trux”. He holds a commanding lead over Mark Harman of Tracy in the point tally. Two points separate first place Brad Myers of Brentwood and Danville’s Jim Freethy in the Hobby Stock division. Watch out for Antioch’s Laura Crabtree as she is closing in on Mike Felt, leader of the “Four-Bangers”. Racing action starts at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. Grandstands open at 5 p.m. Pits open at 1 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 6-12 years old and senior citizens 65 years old and older. A family pack of two adult and two child tickets is $30. Antioch Speedway is located in the Contra Costa Fairgrounds, 1201 W. Tenth St., Antioch, Calif.
