Rich Vleck, TULSA, Okla. (September 4, 2007)- It's unlikely, but George Suprick, who currently is 18
th in Hard Charger points, could pick up this year's award; that's how close things are.
The third year of tabulating positions advanced in A-Main competition wraps up this Saturday Night at the Fulton Speedway in the Gater Racing News Hard Charger of the Season Award presented by Red Bear Hand Cleaner.
Chuck Hebing leads the current Hard Charger Standings, where points are only tabulated when a competitor finishes higher than where they started a 25-lap A-Main. Even though “Cobra” has started up front a number of times this year, he has rarely struggled when starting in the back.
Hebing moved up three spots from his fourth place starting spot on Saturday at Woodhull en route to his fifth consecutive A-Main Victory, stretching his lead in these standings from one to four points over Ray Preston. The Ontario, NY driver has finished runner-up the first two years of this series, but would like to improve it by one position this season.
Ray Preston is closing in on his best finish in the Championship Point Standings, but with a small progression forward in Saturday’s $2,007-to-Win 25-lap A-Main at Fulton, he could win this award as well. While he has not advanced more than seven spots in any one feature this year, he has finished higher than where he started in more than half of the races.
Because the top-three share in the point fund, established by Gater and Red Bear, Chris Muhleisen is hoping that the remaining competitors do not pick up too many points this Saturday. Muhleisen is unlikely to be in competition Saturday due to engine woes and will look to hang on to third.
Jared Zimbardi is just four back of Muhleisen entering this final event. The runner-up in the Championship Standings was the winner of the Hard Charger Award in the inaugural season of 2005.
A log jam for fifth finds Geoff Quackenbush, Bryan Howland, part-timer Coleman Gulick, 2006 Hard Charger Award Recipient Don Adamczyk, Rob Pietz, Scott Kreutter, Bobby Breen, Dave Wickham and Blake Breen all within five positions advanced of one another. A poor run in a National Parts Peddler Heat coupled with a strong run in the A-Main might just be enough to move them up the ladder.
This will be the final race of the year counting towards the Gater Racing News Hard Charger of the Season Standings presented by Red Bear Hand Cleaner. Along with the top-three in points picking up a cash bonus, the top-10 after Saturday Night will receive Red Bear Hand Cleaning products at the 2007 Awards Banquet this Winter.
