Rich Vleck, TULSA, Okla. (September 4, 2007)- After six races, only six points separate two drivers from the A-Verdi Golden Crown, claiming them the first King of Central New York.
Despite winning four of the first six A-Verdi Storage Containers King of Central New York Series events in 2007, Chuck Hebing trails Canandaigua Speedway winner Jason Barney heading into the series and season finale at Fulton Speedway on Saturday.
"This is right where we want to be heading into the final race, out in front," said Jason Barney about the only point standings he and his Walton's Farm and Auto No. 87 team have focused on this year.
If Barney can finish at least second, or within two positions of Chuck Hebing, he will be crowned champion and be set to pick up the lion's share of the $3,000 point fund established by A-Verdi Storage Containers and Riverside Bar and Grill in Ganaoque, Ontario.
Jared Zimbardi may not be able to catch "Cobra" in the Championship Standings, but with some help he can win the King of CNY title. Zimbardi would need a top-five finish, coupled with Barney and Hebing finishing outside of the top-10 to wear the crown at the end of the night atop an A-Verdi Storage Container Hauler.
Even though they cannot win the title, local drivers Blake and Bobby Breen of Savannah are tightly packed in with Ray Preston of Romulus for fourth through sixth positions. All three have finished all six events this season.
Don Adamczyk scored a sixth place finish at Fulton in May and will look to use that to remain seventh in points. Dave Wickham has all but locked up eighth place.
The top-10 in points in this series at the end of the night will partake in the point fund at the end of the year. While the eight drivers listed above are already locked in, two more positions remain open.
All Jessica Zemken will have to do is show up at Fulton to pick up ninth in the seven-race series. The Sprakers, NY driver is planning on attending so this should not be an issue.
The 10
th position is wide open heading into this final event with four drivers all having a real chance to get the final points-paying position.
Despite missing the season-opening weekend, Scott Kreutter finds himself three points ahead of Gary Troutman entering the season finale. Jeff Cook is just eight points back of Kreutter and will look to duplicate his fourth place showing back in May. Geoff Quackenbush remains in the hunt as well, only 18 points out of 10
th.
Forty-seven different competitors have run an A-Verdi King of Central New York event this season, with that number likely to push 50 this Saturday. This is likely to be the first of many years of this highly popular series, giving drivers and teams an opportunity to run for points on a more limited basis.
