Dixon Takes East Bay’s David Reutimann Foundation 50

Top Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modified drivers gathered at East Bay Saturday night for the annual David Reutimann Foundation 50. The race, won in 2009 by David Reutimann, promised to deliver exciting action and made good on the promise.

Former division champion Jeff Mathews grabbed the early lead and set his sights on dominating. David Reutimann slipped by for second and began his pursuit of Mathews. Kyle Bronson charged to the runner-up spot, but slipped back a few laps later. A series of caution flags forced the field to realign often, leading to a red flag on lap 28 to allow the drivers to replenish their tearoff supply. On the restart, Devin Dixon, who had eased past Reutimann, now became the immediate challenger to Mathews. Ten laps later, Reutimann again drove by, but a caution flag wiped out the pass. Three laps later, it was Dixon’s turn to make a pass, grabbing the lead from Mathews. Dixon steadily pulled away to claim the $1,000 victory.

“We were kinda terrible in the heat,” the winner admitted. “It was just a matter of patience, which is what these longer distance races are. The main thing is to be there at the end. I went with a different tire, a soft tire and everyone else was on hard tires. It worked.”

Mathews was credited with second, ahead of Reutimann. Roger Crouse was never worse than fourth, his final finishing spot while a hard-charging Terry Bronson claimed fifth from his 15th starting position. Mathews, Reutimann and Crouse won heats.

Billy Howard helped his cause in his pursuit for the 2010 point championship by winning the main event in the Outlaw 4 class. His progress was minimal as point leader Matt Haynes crossed in second, so the division will settle the matter next week. Jesse Brown had a yo-yo run, eventually coming home third, ahead of Ronnie Bennett and Michael Gulvin. Heats were wins for Howard, Gulvin and Stephen Hohlbaugh.

The Q Auto & Injury Attorney Limited Late Models brought a sixth feature win for John Bradley. Bradley assumed the lead after Forrest Gough slipped back on lap two. Plenty of carnage resulted in some torn up race cars, but the race ran to completion. Bradley was trailed by Thomas Scott, Roger Crouse, John Wilson and Tim Gay. Heats were claimed by Bradley and Crouse.

Raymond Vann picked up where he left off last week, adding yet another feature win, ahead of Johnnie Alexander, who notched his second straight runner-up finish in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Roberto Morfin Sr. charged to third with Thomas Burnside in fourth and Chuck Mathias fifth. Frank Miller, George Handy and Vann were in Victory Lane in the heats.

Janine Dixon led flag to flag in the Dirt Daubers.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park for two nights, Friday, December 10 and Saturday, December 11. The Friday action will feature Precision Kia Street Stocks and Outlaw 4s, along with preliminary events for the NeSmith Late Model World Championship. The Saturday show will offer a 100-lap Late Model main paying $10,000 to the winner. Joining the action will be the Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, motorstas.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and Dirt Daubers. Saturday’s event will be the final race of the 2010 season.
