9/29/10 – Two more IRA shows were on tap this past weekend
for Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports 17B team. First up was the
Wilmot Raceway on Saturday for the Fall Festival of Speed. The night started
off well as Bill turned a lap time of 14.100 seconds in qualifying which was
good enough to claim the Osborn & Son Quick Time Award. With track
conditions rapidly going south, the team got to work on making the right
changes before the heat race. With a 6th starting spot in the 1st
heat, Bill knew he had to quickly get to work on moving forward. He battled
with the 3rd & 4th place cars through out the 10
lapper & when the checkered flag waved, he settled for a 4th
place finish, which was good enough to transfer to the feature.
The #2 pill was
drawn for the feature inversion, which meant the 17B machine would take the
green flag from position #4 in the 30 lapper. At the drop of the green, Bill
quickly went to the top side of the track & began his march toward the
front. He had moved in to 2nd rather quickly, then began to track
down the leader. As the lead pair entered traffic, Bill was knocking on the
leaders door, trying to find a way around him. Just as he was set to make a
move, the yellow flag came, which meant an open track on the ensuing restart.
Bill tried his best, but didn’t have enough to overtake the race leader in the
remaining laps, so he would go on to bring home his 22nd consecutive
top 5 IRA feature finish, with his 2nd place run.
It was off to the LaSalle Speedway on Sunday
for the Bill Waite Jr. Memorial, where once again, Bill would claim the Osborn
& Son quick time award by turning a lap of 10.944 seconds. He was the only
car out of the 32 present to turn a sub 11 second lap. He would once again
start 6th in heat race #1. Through out the 10 laps, Bill steadily
worked his way to the front, and on the last lap, made a daring move to briefly
take the lead, only to be passed back coming to the checkered out of turn 4.
The rest of the
night was canceled after the a fellow competitor flipped in to the turn 3 catch
fence during the 3rd heat race, which resulted in a few of the fence
post’s to be toppled over, making it unsafe to complete the night’s activities.
This weekend the Buesser
Concrete / Rod End Supply 17B team will take their 352 point lead to the final
IRA point show of the year at the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, WI on
Saturday, October 2nd.
