9/22/10 – It was back to the Oshkosh Speedzone this past
Friday for the 3rd & final round of the Budweiser Triple Crown
for Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team. After picking up rounds 1
& 2 earlier in the season, the team had high hopes going in to this one.
The night didn’t start as planned when Bill ended up turning only the 21st
quickest time in qualifying out of the 28 cars present. From that point on, the
team had to dig them selves out a deep hole the rest of the night. Bill took
the green flag in heat #3 from the 7th spot, he quickly got to work
once the green flag flew and was inside the top 5 early on in the 10 lap event.
After battling the 4th place car for a few laps, Bill eventually got
around him & he had his eyes on the 3rd place car. He would
ultimately claim the 3rd spot with a daring pass in turn 4 of the
final lap, which was good enough to earn a spot in the 30 lap main event. By
virtue of the poor qualifying time, Bill started 17th in the main
event, & before he even crossed the line to take the green, he was caught
up in someone else’s wreck. After a quick stop in the work area for the crew to
check things over, Bill rejoined the tail of the field. Once the field went
back to green, Bill started to work his way towards the front, he knew he had
to be patient, yet aggressive to make sure he didn’t get to far behind the
leaders. He was masterfully working his way through the field and was in the
top 10 by the mid way point of the race. Over the course of the last 10 laps,
Bill really got to work and put on a driving clinic through traffic and was in
the top 5 with a few laps remaining, by the time the checkered flew, he worked
his way in to 4th position, to bring the top 5 finish streak to 20
straight IRA feature’s. By virtue of the 4th place finish, the team
had also earned enough points to claim the track’s Budweiser Triple Crown,
which consisted of the 3 IRA show’s through out the year.
Next up on the
schedule was the 14th Annual Frank Filskov Memorial on Saturday at
the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, WI. This night started off completely
different than Friday, as Bill would go out & lay down a lap time of 11.696
seconds which would end up being quick time out of the 31 cars present.By virtue of quick time, Bill had to start 6th
in the 1st 10 lap heat race. He once again quickly got to work on
trying to secure a top 5 finish, but once inside the top 5, Bill didn’t stop
there, as he continued to work forward and at the end of the 10 laps, he would
bring home a 3rd place finish. With a 2 pill drawn for the feature
inversion, Bill started the 27 lap main event from the 4th spot. At
the drop of the green, Bill jumped in to3rd place and began to slowly reel in
the leaders who were running side by side. After a caution early on, Bill made
his move on 2nd place and then set his eyes on the leader. Bill was
working the top side of the track perfectly and eventually passed for the lead
coming out of turn 4 & from then on he began to open up a sizeable lead on
the field. A few more cautions throughout the race, gave the competition some
chances at Bill, but the B Squared Motorsports 17B proved to be to strong, as
Bill would go on to claim the checkered flag in the Prestigious IRA event. With
that win, Bill now has 7 IRA wins in 2010 & 14 in his IRA career. The team
also kept the top 5 streak alive by virtue of the win & it now stands at 21
straight IRA feature events.
This weekend the Hoeft
Builders / Weld Racing 17B team will take their 280 point lead to the Wilmot
Raceway on Saturday, September 25th & then the La Salle Speedway
