7/28/10 – Bill Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team were in
action 2 nights this past weekend at the Elko Speedway in Elko, MN for
the Amsoil Dirt Nationals. Friday’s events began will Bill turning the
8th quickest time out of the 33 cars present. He would start from the
5th position in heat race #4 & needed a top 4 finish to transfer to
the feature. After struggling to get a handle on the track conditions,
Bill would bring home a 5th place finish, which meant he would need to
run the B-main. He would start from the 2nd position & quickly grab
the lead. Once out front, he never looked back & would go to pick up
the win, which meant he was now in the feature. He would take the green
flag in the 30 lap feature from the 11th spot. After taking a few laps
to get the car working to his liking, Bill started picking off cars lap
after lap. Soon He was battling for a top 5 spot, after a late caution
to bunch the field back up; he would quickly grab the 4th spot on the
restart. That’s right where he would finish night #1 of the Elko Dirt
Nationals.
Saturday night, the team was right back at the Elko
Speedway for the final night of the 2010 Dirt Nationals. The night would
start rather similar to Friday, as Bill would turn the 8th fastest time
in qualifying out of the 29 cars present. He started 4th in heat race
#2, & before Bill even took the green flag, he was sitting in 6th
position, as the 3rd row cars began to pass before the white chalk line
& the officials let the start go, which meant Bill would have to
make some daring moves throughout the 10 laps in order to transfer.
After having a 3 car battle for the last few laps, Bill grabbed the 5th
& final transfer spot to move on to the feature event. He would take
the green flag for the 30 lap finale from the pole position. After
quickly grabbing the lead at the start, Bill opened up a sizable lead on
the rest of the field. The track began to take rubber midway through
the 30 lapper, which meant Bill had to try & conserve the tire so
they would last. A caution on lap 28 would bunch the field back up,
& with a right rear tire going flat, Bill was pretty much a sitting
duck. On the restart, Bill tried his hardest to hang on to the lead, but
was eventually passed & would have to settle for the 2nd spot.
With that 2nd place finish, Bill has finished inside the top 5 in 13
consecutive IRA feature events.
This weekend the K&N
Engineering / Diversified Machine Inc. 17B will be in action at the
Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, IL on Friday for a local 410
sprint show, and then it’s off to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI for
more IRA action.
