7/15/10 – When the World of Outlaws come to town, the locals
tend to go out & give it there best shot to beat them. That’s what Bill
Balog & the B Squared Motorsports team tried to do this past weekend.
First up was the
LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, IL for “Kasey’s King of LaSalle”. The night didn’t
start like the team had planned, as when Bill was coming to take the green flag
in qualifying, the steering gear case had cracked in half resulting in a power
steering fluid shower for Bill. The crew, along with Bill quickly made a gear
change & had the car ready for the heat. He would have to start in the back
as a result of no qualifying time. The race went green to checkered with very
little passing & Bill would finish right where he started in 9th.
The B-main was up next & a top 6 finish was needed to transfer to the
feature. Taking the green flag from 8th, Bill knew he had his work
cut out for him. By the time the checkered flew, he battled his way to a 4th
place finish, which was good enough to earn a 22nd place starting
spot in the 35 lap feature. The feature event had many cautions & red
flags, which allowed Bill to move up inside the top 15 by the midway point of
the race. By the time the checkered flag flew, Bill had fought his way to a 12th
place finish. The result wasn’t what they expected, but the team & driver
were happy considering the car was brought home in one piece.
The 2nd event on the weekend was again with the
World of Outlaws, this time it was at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI for
the “Jim Boyd Memorial”. After a lengthy rain delay, which set the show back
about 3 hours, qualifying began & Bill was set to go out mid way through
the 32 car field. The outlaws made the decision to use 1 lap qualifying to help
move the show along, so with more added pressure on Bill, he would go out &
set quick time for a few cars, before being bumped down to 4th by
the end. The time was good enough to start 4th in heat race #4. With
the track still fairly heavy & narrow, Bill would move up one position
throughout the race to bring home a 3rd place finish. For the 40 lap
feature, he would take the green from 12th place. He was racing mid
pack when the night came to an end for the 17B, as he caught the cushion in
turn 2, which caused the car to bicycle & just as he got the car back on
all 4 tires he slammed in to the outside wall. The result was a broken front
end & many other bolt on parts.
This weekend the Hoeft
Builders / Competition Driveline Service sponsored 17B will be in action on
Friday July 16th at the Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI, then on
Saturday at the Eagle Valley Speedway in Jim Falls, WI.
