2008 IRA champ, Bill Balog was looking to wrap up his 2nd
consecutive IRA Championship this past weekend with events at the Oshkosh
Speedzone & the Dodge County Fairgrounds Speedway. Not only did he clinch
the championship, he showed why he is a 2 time champ with a drive from 12th
to 1st in the “Dick Witt Checkered Classic” at Dodge County on
Saturday.
The weekend started
at Oshkosh on Friday, Bill was last out to qualify of the 31 cars present and
turned the 2nd fastest time of the night with a lap of 12.328
seconds. For the heat, he started 6th and crossed the finish line at
the end of the 10 laps in 4th. The 5 pill was pulled for the feature
inversion, which meant the B Squared Motorsports 17B would start 10th.
At the start of the 30 lapper, Bill would quickly found his rhythm and began
his forward progression. After enduring a few late race yellows, he was able to
bring home a solid 6th place finish.
The next night the
team was in action in Beaver Dam at the Dodge County Fairgrounds for the “Dick
Witt Checkered Classic”. With another high pill drawn for qualifying, Bill went
out and made the most of it with a lap time of 17.348 seconds which was good
enough for 9th out of the 31 cars present. He started 4th
in heat race #3 and brought home a 3rd place finish in the rather
single file event. After all the heats were complete, the 9th place
in time wasn’t good enough to make the top 10 invert, which meant Bill and crew
had their work cut out for them if they wanted to visit victory lane. They
would end up starting 12th in the 25 lapper and wouldn’t stay their
for long. Once the race went green, Bill was on the move to the front and by
lap 10 he was chasing down the race leader. Lap 12 is when he took the lead
& quickly began to open up a sizable lead on the rest of the field. Once
again a few late race cautions would tighten the field back up, but the B
Squared Motorsports 17B was to strong for the competition and would go on to
capture their 4th feature win of the year and clinch their 2nd
consecutive championship.
This week the final
IRA race of the year takes place at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in
Plymouth, WI on Saturday. There is a rain date of Sunday if needed.
