Geving overcomes adverse  track conditions to pull off top three finish in All Pro feature event

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (5-09-09) – When Alissa Geving becomes old enough to purchase a lottery ticket in September, chances are her first one will be a winner because the teenage lady racer from Penngrove has a way of succeeding even when the odds are very high. Saturday night, Geving was one of 19 cars who faced a tough hand at Petaluma Speedway in the way of a challenging track. In the end, the defending champion earned her third top five finish of the season.

“I had to focus really well all night long in this one because the track was very odd, to say the least,” said Geving. “It was very rough, each corner was very different from the others and it was really not the way it usually is. Cars were bouncing all over the place all night long.”

Geving’s car was no exception when it came to being tossed around during Saturday night’s mechanical rodeo. The soon to be Ursuline High School Graduate held on to the reigns of her Tillet Tool Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, #3x Maxim Sprint Car long enough in qualifying to earn the 10th position with a 13:363 second lap. Her speed during qualifying reached 99.040 miles per hour, according to the AMB electronic scoring system.

In the preliminary heat racing, Geving drove from her third place starting position into second place at the waving of the green flag. After pursuing Nick Ringo Jr., Geving went to the low side of turn four to take the lead she never relinquished for the remainder of the event.

“In qualifying the track wasn’t too bad but by the time we were racing in the heat race I knew we all had our work cut out for us later in the night,” said Geving. “I just really focused on my line and tried to avoid to problem spots and let the race come to me all night long. It was all you could really do because if you got over aggressive your night would definitely come to a quick end.”

In the 25-lap feature event, Geving started ninth in the field. By the time the race reached the fifth lap mark she had closed in on the top five and two laps later took over the fifth position with her next mission being a run into the top three. Twelve laps later, Geving reached that second goal of the night.

Saturday’s race was led early by Ricky Wright Junior, who fell victim to the rough track when he stalled on the 18th lap and eventual winner Bradley Terrell took over the lead spot with Shawn Ariagga in second place. Geving has moved up into the fourth position of the event when Wright fell out of contention. In the final laps of the race she held off a hard charging Brandon Davis for the top three spot.

“I’m really happy with how tonight turned out,” added Geving. “Everyone worked hard and stayed focused and it paid off. Sure a win would be great but on a track like this a top three feels really good. I want to congratulate Bradley Terrell and Jim Vanlare on their second win of the year too.”

Geving will return to Petaluma Speedway this Saturday night for the All Pro Sprint Car championship. On May 23rd she is expected to appear with the Golden State Challenge Series at Calistoga Speedway for one of the two nights of competition. On Sunday, May 24 the 17-year old student that maintains a higher that 4.0 grade average will graduate from UrsulineHigh School. She has recently announced she will attend ChicoUniversity and hopes to compete on Friday nights at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico.
