Terrell honors his biggest fan with Mother’s Day weekend All Pro Petaluma victory
By Bill Sullivan
PETALUMA, CA (5/9/09) – When it comes to racing sprint cars, Bradley Terrell has many dedicated fans and one of his biggest supporters is his mother, Kim. Saturday night Terrell paid tribute to his biggest fan in fine fashion, winning his second feature event of the season on the eve of Mother’s Day in the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Sprint Car Series.
“This one is for my Mom, I’m dedicating this win to her for Mother’s Day,” said Terrell. “I can’t thank her enough for all her support in my racing. I really wanted to win tonight for her and I did it.”
Saturday’s drive to victory was far from any cake walk for Terrell, in fact, it was more comparable to a gruelling hike through a desert canyon on a sweltering summer afternoon. Trying track conditions made passing difficult for everyone in competition throughout the third night of championship competition on the 1/3 mile oval located on the Sonoma-Marin County Fairgrounds.
Driving the VanLare Steering Repair #5V Sprint Car, Terrell qualified 11th in Saturday’s field on a track that was already showing the effects of a breezy afternoon in the North Bay. In his preliminary heat race Terrell started in the third position and maintained that until the checkered flag where he finished behind Shawn Arriaga and Jeff Parady.
In the feature event, Terrell started in the middle of the field, on the outside of the second row. The waving of the green flag saw Ricky Wright Jr. powered off the outside of the front row to take the early lead of the 25-lap feature event.
Carefully working his way through the field, Terrell advanced into the top three following a restart on the fourth lap when he initiated a slingshot pass by taking the high route of turn one and two with Arriaga in his wake. Once in third, Terrell began closing in on leader Wright and second place runner Jeremy Burt.
With nine laps down, Terrell advanced into second place when Burt attempted an unsuccessful pass on Wright for the lead only to fall back several spots. Wright pulled several car lengths ahead of the field while Terrell and Arriaga duelled for the bridesmaid position with defending champion Alissa Geving in tow.
On the 18th lap, Wright fell victim to the rutted track surface when he bounced through turns one and turn and came to a stop to draw a yellow. The restart placed the former leader at the tail of the line up and put Terrell and Arriaga to the front where they spent the final laps battling for the lead.
Despite many efforts by Arriaga to pass on the low side, Terrell used the high side of the track to maintain his momentum all the way to the checkered flag where he scored his second feature win of the year in the All Pro Series. Arriaga finished second followed by Geving and Brandon Davis.
“This track was really tough tonight, it was difficult to master it,” said Terrell. “It was a fine line track with two totally different lines in each corner. I have to thank Jim VanLare and the crew for giving me a great car once again. It’s a privilege to be driving for this team this year.”
With the win, Terrell maintains the point lead in Petaluma Speedway’s All Pro Series. He will return this Saturday for the fourth championship event of the year.
