Geving returns to PetalumaSpeedway victory lane in bizarre second All Pro Series point race

PETALUMA, CA (4-25-09) – Following a series of confusing events, Penngrove’s Alissa Geving returned to victory lane at Petaluma Speedway Saturday night. Geving drove the Tillet Tool Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, #3x sprint car to victory during round two of the All Pro Sprint Car Series, marking her second top five finish of the series in as many events in the campaign.

“I’m glad things finally turned around for us,” said Geving. “We still had our share of challenges tonight. The car was not handling like I prefer but I made it work. I would have been happy with a top three finish but I ended up being in the right place at the right time near the end and ended up with our first win of the season.”

After finishing fourth in her heat race, Geving started the 25-lap feature event in the third position. Fighting an ill handling car on a tacky, hooked up 1/3 mile track, Geving maintained her top three position for the majority of the event, trailing early race leader and series point leader Bradley Terrell and Jeremy Burt who led the first 16 laps of the event.

It was on lap 22 of the event that things drastically changed for the top three drivers, including Geving.   As Burt drove into the fourth turn his front suspension failed, sending him upside and down while Geving moved into second place behind Terrell. During the incident, the race never underwent a rd flag, however, a yellow flag was thrown to remove Burt’s damaged car from the track.

During the lengthy caution period, Terrell suffered a flat tire and track officials waved the black flag, not withdrawing prior to Geving passing by. A driver who pays close attention to safety, Geving did as directed. As Geving pulled off the track surface she was immediately summoned by track officials to keep moving and return to the track as they had mistakenly failed to reel in the black flag in time.

“When I saw the black flag I thought two different things,” said Geving. “Last week my crew had them wave it for a safety issue so I figured there was something wrong with the car that I was not aware of. My second thought was that they called the race as it was so late. I just made sure I followed the rules and did what I was directed to do and pulled off. Right away they waved me back on and I never stopped. The officials took full responsibility for the mistake but it really broke my concentration for those final laps.”

Although she went back to green flag racing somewhat miffed by the forced excursion though the pit area, Geving managed to dominate the final four laps of the race to pick off her first victory of the 2009 All Pro Series championship. The win was somewhat shadowed by a negative response from fans regarding the controversial black flag incident as most we not informed it was an admitted error by the track officials and was corrected respectfully so.

Geving will take a one week break from racing to attend her Ursuline High School Senior Prom next weekend. The Petaluma All Pro Series returns on May 9. Prior to that event, Geving and her Chicko Motorsports Teams will announce their schedule for the remainder of the 2009 racing season.
