Terrell drives Vanlare Sprint Car to clean sweep in Petaluma All Pro Opener

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (3-23-09)  - Sebastopol’s Bradley Terrell  started the 2009 racing season off in winning fashion Saturday night. Terrell drove his way to victory in the season opening Petaluma Speedway All Pro sprint car series aboard the Vanlare Steering Repair #5V sprint car.

“I really have to thank Jim Vanlare for letting me drive his car for the night,” said Terrell, who would have missed the opener if it hadn’t been for the veteran car owner from Santa Rosa who offered his ride when he learned Terrell’s motor was still under construction. “Last year we missed the first few races and we made it to fourth in the point standings. I know we would have done better and I didn’t want to start a season off like that again. I really appreciate what the VanLare family did for me.”

Saturday was not the first time that the combination of Terrell and VanLare were victorious at Petaluma’s 3/8 mile track. Late last season, Terrell utilized a new motor built by Vanlare to break it in. On that night he claimed victory on his hometown track as well.

Saturday night it was a perfect combination of man and machine at Petaluma Speedway for Terrell. His success began in the heat race when he charged from third place into second on the opening lap to begin pursuit of veteran driver Art McCarthy. After chasing McCarthy for much of the race, Terrell went to the outside of the second turn on the sixth lap to pass for the lead he would never relinquish.

“I had a little bit of trouble in the first few laps with the way we had the car set up,” said Terrell. “I adapted to it and made it work. After the heat we made the needed changes for the A main.”

In the A-main, Terrell put on an impressive performance from the opening green flag of the race. Starting in the 8th position, the 18 year old high school senior went to the high side and followed fellow competitor Jeff Parady around five cars. Before the initial lap was complete, Terrell then overtook the driver that led him towards the front when he moved inside of Parady inside of turns three and four to take second place.

Once in the bridesmaid position, Terrell began pursuit of early race leader and former track champion Shawn Arriaga. Following the only restart of the race on the third lap he moved to the high side of the track and overtook the lead position from Arriaga, completing his 7 position run in less than four laps.

After he claimed the lead, Terrell began working his way into lapped traffic to distance himself from Arriaga and the field. Prior to completion of the event, he lapped his way past McCarthy who was running in 8th at the time.

Following Saturday’s victory that will unofficially place him in the All Pro Series point lead, Terrell will take one week off from the driver’s seat as he prepares his family owned #43 sprint car for the upcoming Civil War Sprint Car Series event at Petaluma Speedway on April 11th. The event marks the opening of the traveling tour and a top run will launch Terrell forward in the point standings of the competitive campaign.

“We’re going to take this week off to get my car ready for the Civil War,” said Terrell. “I’m looking forward to the series starting at Petaluma and hopefully we can have a strong finish to start it off.”

After the April 11th Civil War opener, Terrell plans to continue his pursuit of the 2009 Petaluma Speedway All Pro Sprint Car Championship. He will also compete in the Civil War Series throughout the season.

Jim Vanlare’s sponsors of the #5V sprint car that Terrell was aboard Saturday include Randy Hanson Auto Body and Aussie Towing. Bradley Terrell would like to that his longtime supporters as he begins the new season as well including Argonaut Const, Millhouse Glass, the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, Randy Hanson Auto Body and Paint. Vanlare Steering Repair, A1 Shower and Mirror Incorporated, DK Embroidery, Knockout Signs, Allied of Santa Rosa and Sausalito and Altes Engineering
