When the Upper Midwest sprint Car Series (UMSS) opens its season April
24 at Kopellah Speedway, they will not only "cut the ribbon" on a brand
new era of sprint car racing in the Twin Cities, they will also unveil
a unique nightly race format. Aimed at giving the race fan and track
operator a more value-based program, the 2009 UMSS format will be as
follows:
1) Ultimate Sprint Races (Heats) - Draw for position.
Number of Ultimate Sprint races based on car count. As few as 5 cars
for 5 laps and as many as 8 cars for 8 laps. Drivers are awarded points
toward main event.
2) Challenge Races - All drivers will compete
in Challenge races. The whole field will be divided into two Challenge
races with the field inverted from Ultimate Sprint race finish. Drivers
are awarded points toward main event.
3) Main Event - 20 cars
for 20 laps. High point driver from finishes in Ultimate Sprint races
and Challenge races will draw a pill for inversion. Inversion will be
from 0-8.
"There is strong support from the owners and drivers
to bring this unique race format to area race fans in 2009," stated Don
Randall, UMSS board member. "The race fans will get to see more sprint
car races each night at a value-based price."
To keep the show
moving, there will be a one lap per minute time limit on each race, and
each car will have its own push vehicle for the beginning of races and
after red flags.
