After winning the finale at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Sunday night, reigning World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz also claimed the inaugural Oil City Cup, presented to the driver that accumulated the most points over the course of the two-day event.
 
The current World of Outlaws championship point leader finished third on the first night of the Oil City Cup, and despite battling a severe cold and having to wait an extra day due to heavy rain, he followed that up with the win, which earned him the overall title among the 30-plus drivers that competed on both nights at Castrol Raceway.
 
Schatz was ecstatic with not only winning the Oil City Cup, but especially with the hospitality that was shown to World of Outlaws drivers and teams over the course of the weekend. The native of Fargo, North Dakota also was proud to add his name to the record books, as one of just four drivers that have now won a series event north of the border.
 
"Everyone up here did a great job and the fans were great," said Schatz, following the World of Outlaws first visit to Edmonton. "We're excited about coming back next year and hopefully defending our win." 
 
In addition to winning his 14^th A-Feature of the season and extending his lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings, as he chases his second straight title, Schatz set a new track record at Castrol Raceway on Sunday night. He shattered the one-day old mark by nearly two-tenths of a second and two miles per hour, setting the new bar at 12.693 seconds at 106.358 miles per hour on the semi-banked 3/8-mile. It was the second time in less than a week that he set a new track record in time trials.
 
"We had an awesome lap qualifying and it was quite a bit faster than everyone else, and we set a new track record," smiled Schatz.
 
Schatz and the World of Outlaws will return to action on Friday, August 24 and Saturday, August 25 at Skagit Speedway in Washington, with the third and fourth events of the Gold Rush Tour for 2007, with the finale of the two-day event paying $25,000 to the winner. Both nights of racing will be taped for broadcast on SPEED on September 2 and September 9.
