Canyon's WINTER CHALLENGE Taking ShapePEORIA, Ariz. (Dec. 15) written by Bill Martin/IMCA and edited by Doug Gabbard/CSP – IMCA sanctioning returns to Canyon Speedway Park in 2009, with Winter Challenge Series action for both the Modified and Southern SportMod divisions.
Modifieds will race for $1,000 to win and a minimum of $100 to start
at Jan. 24, 25 and 31, and Feb. 7, 8, and 14 shows. The modified rules will allow a roller cam with 50lbs visible in front of the motor plate and inside the body. A NO CLAIM rule is also in effect as well as quick change rear ends with standard 9 bolt Ford gearing ratios. Southern SportMods are also on the card for the weekend shows Jan. 24,25 again Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 21-22 at the Peoria speedplant.
Friday Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and 20 will see open practice nights for all divisions at the race park from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

State, as well as special series points, will be awarded for all
eight Modified races. Each feature winner and the overall series
champion will be added to the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
Southern SportMods vie for IMCA national, state and special series points as well.
Canyon will also host the first EQ Cylinder heads Wild West Modified Tour - Southern Series opening doubleheader Feb. 21-22, 2009. The regular track point season at the Doug Gabbard-owned and promoted, 3/8-mile clay oval starts in March for the modified/sportmod competitors and continues on Saturday nights through September. The popular stock-car divisions featuring Supers, Pures & Bombers will compete for track points during the 2009 Challenge. Our focus is based on providing action packed fun and a family atmosphere. The day racing at Canyon is known for good BBQ, family fun and our race competitors provide spectacular competition says Gabbard.
Each Winter Challenge show will host hot lap sessions at noon and racing will start at 1 p.m. Driver entry fee for the modified portion of the Winter Series programs is $50 and pit passes are $30. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and military, children 12 and under are FREE.
