Jason Meyers Cuts Donny Schatz's Lead to 97 Points: Three Races Remain in 2008
Concord, NC- October 19, 2008-Jason Meyers used two fifth-place finishes over the weekend in his home state of California to gain 41 points on Donny Schatz in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings. The difference between the two title contenders is now just 97 markers with three events remaining in 2008.
Meyers leads the series with 47 Top-Five finishes, which is also a career high. In addition, he leads the series with 14 fast time honors in time trails. He was quickest in qualifying on Saturday night at his home track of Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare to earn five bonus points in the standings. Of the two remaining tracks on the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series schedule, he won at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway last season and finished fourth at Heartland Park Topeka.
Schatz rallied to finish 13th on Friday night at Ocean Speedway after using a provisional to start the A-Feature, where he lined up 25th. The two-time defending series champion leads the series in Top-10 finishes with 55 in 60 events. He also leads all drivers with 16 A-Feature victories. Of the two remaining tracks on the schedule, he won at both last year, as he looks for his third consecutive championship.
Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion, picked up his seventh win of the season on Friday night at Ocean Speedway, in a thriller over Jac Haudenschild. He was second on Saturday night at Thunderbowl Raceway to earn his 32nd Top-Five of the season. He is solidly in the third spot in points, 71 markers ahead of Joey Saldana.
Saldana remains fourth in points on the strength of five wins along with 44 Top-10 finishes.
Jac Haudenschild used a win on Saturday night and a runner-up performance on Friday night to remain solidly in the fifth position in the standings. He has won five times this year and has 45 Top-10 finishes.
Craig Dollansky, who continues to recover from an arm injury sustained at Eldora Speedway on September 19th, is sixth in points.
Kerry Madsen continues to hold down the seventh spot in the standings on the strength of 36 Top-10 finishes. The reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year is 59 points ahead of Chad Kemenah.
Kemenah also has amassed 36 Top-10 finishes this season, with 12 of those being Top-Fives. He is currently eighth in points.
Terry McCarl rebounded after a first lap accident on Friday night to finish sixth at Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday night. He remains ninth in points, and closed to within 19 markers of Kemenah.
Daryn Pittman, who has won four times this season, remains 10th in points. He has 30 Top-10 finishes this season.
Sam Hafertepe Jr., who finished third at Thunderbowl Raceway, moved ahead of Kraig Kinser in the standings after the weekend and is now 11th. The sophomore driver has 17 Top-10 runs this season.
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Saturday, October 25 at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas for an event which was postponed by rain last month.
