Haudenschild Wins Thriller Over Meyers by Mere Inches at Lebanon Valley Speedway
West Lebanon, NY- September 21, 2008-Jac Haudenschild put himself in esteemed company on Sunday night picking up his 50th career Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-Feature win, after prevailing in a thrilling duel with Jason Meyers at Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York on Sunday night. He won by a mere 0.014 second, taking the lead on the final turn of the final lap, after a late caution set up a two lap shootout. Just nine drivers have won 50 or more A-Feature events in their careers with the series.
The race on Sunday night was the continuation of an event that started on July 20 and was postponed, just prior to the 25-lap A-Feature which was completed tonight. Haudenschild kept pace with Meyers during the middle stages of the race and used the late caution to his advantage to get a good run on the leader on the high side of the blazing fast high-banked half-mile. The fourth Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win of the season for the veteran driver was worth $10,000.
"It is pretty special," said Haudenschild of his 50th A-Feature win with the World of Outlaws. "We have been out here for a long time and I definitely have a good ride this year. It's good to know that you are getting in a good car each night. Leonard Lee has the car going good. The car felt good tonight and has been fast all year. We got a run him there on the restart over the last two laps and it was a good one to win."
On the final restart with two laps to go, Haudenschild looked to the high side of turns one and two in the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim, with Meyers holding on to his lead down the back straightaway. Haudenschild again looked high in turns three and four as the pair motored their way toward the white flag. On the last lap, he again charged to the high side of turns one and two and was right on Meyers down the back straightaway. Just inches off the wall in turn four, Haudenschild was able squeeze by Meyers as the pair worked their way to the checkered flag in the closest finish of the season to-date.
"The restart definitely helped us," explained the winner. "It boxed us back up there and got us right up on him. I was able to get a run on him there at the end."
Haudenschild lined up fourth for the event and was able to work his way around two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz, as well as front row starter Sam Hafertepe Jr. on the first lap to set his sights on Meyers. A number of times during the middle stages of the race, he gained ground in lapped traffic as Meyers was setting a blazing fast pace.
"My car was working good everywhere," noted Haudenschild. "On the high side, it was really working good. The track got a little lose on the bottom and it worked up top."
Meyers led the first 24 laps of the event en route to a runner-up finish, which was his series leading 42nd Top-Five of the season in the GLR Investments KPC. He was able to knock 21 points off of Donny Schatz's lead in the championship standings, after the latter had a right rear tire go down while running fourth with two laps to go. The difference is now 118 markers, with 12 events remaining on the schedule.
"It's disappointing to give it away like that," said Meyers. "I was trying to be careful, because I heard someone back there and I couldn't leave the bottom open for him. I must have left just enough room on top. There's just about one driver here that could have put it on the top like that and go around you and that's Haud (Jac Haudenschild) and I didn't know he was behind me. He made a good pass and he deserves to win. It's unfortunate for our team. I thought we had that one, but it's not your's until it's over. It's still a good bounce back after the crash we had the other night. Everyone is working very hard and we're looking forward to the rest of the week."
Sam Hafertepe Jr. matched his best finish of the season as he wound up third in the Fusion Energy Boost J&J. He started on the front row and lost a few spots early in the race, but ran in the Top-Five for the entire duration of the race.
"It was unfortunate that we did not get a good jump into turn one," said Hafertepe. "I think it would have been a lot easier to hold them off if we had gotten the jump in turn one. Our car just wouldn't hold in turns three and four like everyone else's. We'll just go back and mark it down in our notebook as something we need to fix. In turns one and two I think we were awesome. We'll just build on tonight and take it through the rest of the week."
Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion finished fourth in the Q Oil Maxim, with Joey Saldana just behind him in the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI.
Terry McCarl was sixth in the Big Game Treestands Maxim, with Chad Kemenah seventh in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim. Daryn Pittman was eighth in the Titan Garages Maxim, with Jason Sides ninth aboard the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Brooke Tatnell rounded out the Top-10 in his first race filling in for Craig Dollansky in the Snap-on Tools Maxim. Tatnell started 21st en route to picking up the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award.
Meyers, who was looking for his second consecutive A-Feature win at Lebanon Valley, started on the pole by virtue of winning the Crane Cams Dash which was contested back on July 20 before the main event was postponed by rain. He used a strong start at the beginning of the race to jump to a quick lead. On the final restart he was able to lead into turns one and two on the low side of the track with Haudenschild going to the top of the speedway.
"You just want to make a good couple of laps," shared Meyers of his approach on the final restart. "I thought we were good enough and obviously Haud (Jac Haudenschild) was a little bit better at the end. He took the chance and it paid off tonight."
In the middle stages of the race, Meyers was able to extend his lead over Haudenschild in lapped traffic, as he used both the high and low side of the track to get around the slower machines.
"We don't race with a lot of the locals here too much, so you don't really know what their tendencies are or their lines when you come up on them so fast," he explained. "We got through traffic pretty well tonight. The car maneuvered through traffic pretty well. The caution at the end seemed to be a little bit of a relief, but in hindsight, maybe it wasn't."
Hafertepe was glad to see the late race caution which bunched the field up. He restarted in the fifth spot, and gained a couple of spot on the last lap, when Donny Schatz and Kerry Madsen both had right rear tires going down.
"It definitely helped us," said Hafertepe. "We pounced on them and took advantage of their misfortunate. We probably made a better decision on tire."
With just the 25 lap A-Feature event to run on Sunday night, the drivers had one hot lap session to get their cars dialed in. For Hafertepe, this presented a challenge with it being just his second visit to the daunting high-banked oval.
"I was a pretty nervous, not having heat races and just getting a few hot laps," admitted the second-year driver. "We didn't really shake the car down and it was a little different just running the feature. We'll take a third and we can build on that, especially heading to Williams Grove later this week."
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returns to action on Wednesday, September 24 at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York for an event which was postponed by rain earlier this season.
