ASCS Rocky Mountain Championship Double at Aztec! Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 15, 2008) – The American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region is set to put the wraps on the 2008 season with Aztec Speedway's 29th Annual Floyd Reynolds Memorial this Friday and Saturday in Aztec, NM. And, while 17-year-old Derrik Ortega has virtually locked up the series championship, a price has been put on the head of Johnny Herrera, who has reached ASCS Rocky Mountain Region victory lane in ten consecutive New Mexico starts. Albuquerque's Ortega is set to become the eighth different series champion in as many years, as he enters the weekend double with a 199-point lead over Billings, MT, racer Jeremy McCune. Ortega can secure the crown simply by showing up on both nights, and can put the title away one night early by making the feature cut on Friday night. Behind the lead pair in points, the battle for position is intense as only 41 points separate the handful of drivers ranked third through seventh, including 18-year-old Colt Treharn (Los Lunas, NM), Bob Schaeffer (New Castle, CO), 19-year-old Chad Corken (Highlands Ranch, CO), 19-year-old Danielle Ossenfort (Rapid City, SD) and 16-year-old Jake Ossenfort (Rapid City, SD). While there are two full nights to shake out the final top-ten rankings, all eyes will be on Johnny Herrera. Undefeated in the last ten ASCS Rocky Mountain Region events contested in the "Land of Enchantment", dating back to 2005, a bounty of $1,000 has been put into effect. The first driver that can deny Herrera victory lane in "A" Main competition over the weekend will collect a $1,000 bonus. If Herrera can successfully sweep the weekend, something he's done in the least three ASCS Rocky Mountain Region weekend doubles at Aztec, he will collect the $1,000 bonus.
